I've just received 2 pairs of glasses from glassesshop. Ordered 27th July took 12 days to arrive for just £11.86 Excellent quality for the price. There's a code for $5 off "SAVE2011" code valid til 31st Dec 2011. Hope this helps someone..0

I have read a few posts dismissing Specsavers and their service, but I have just had a very positive experience with them. My son has just got his 2nd set of glasses from them (the first were brilliant, not the cheapest of the range but still way cheaper than our previous optician). As he is in between school and uni he technically did not qualify for a free eye test and/or an NHS voucher towards the glasses, but they went out of their way to ensure he could get through. We ordered 2 pairs (one free - excellent if you want some prescription sunglasses) but when they arrived he realised he had made a big mistake with the frames, and didn't want to wear them. Specsavers have changed the frames for us, no quibble at all, and because we decided to stick with just one pair they refunded all the extra costs associated with the redundant 2nd pair like special coatings. I think that is pretty impressive, because after all it was not their fault my son didn't like what he had chosen!0

When I bought my 1.74 high index glass lens (-8.0) from the high street they had to be sent back as there was a blur when I looked towards the outside of the glasses. (e.g looking out the corner of my eye)
They had to measure my old glass lens with what looked like a micrometer type tool.
They told me my previous glass lenses had been made with a xxx ?
Any idea what they were doing as this was nothing to do with my prescription.0 -

Found out it was the base curve the glass was made to.0 -

It appears to me that buying specs online is certainly cheaper than buying from high street optician but there many pitfalls associated with buying online, especially when it comes to complex presciptions and bifocals/varifocals.
I have a friend who is a registered Dispensing Optician and has recently set up a home visiting service to measure and supply specs including high prescriptions and varifocals.
I ordered my new designer frame and varifocals from her recently and I saved about £200 because she has no overheads and staff to pay and I benefitted from her expert advice as she recommended the latest wide design varifocal.0 -

Sounds almost to good to be true. Your friend would still require appropriate optical equipment. I guess travelling is also not cheap money- and timewise. How much did your friend charge for the service or was it priced in?0 -
I went and had my free eye test at tesco a couple of weeks back. Got most of my perscription written on a card for me, however the optician refused to give me my pd and said we dont give it out, went back to the same store today and said to a different member of staff, that id had my eye test and would like my PD, she asked a different optician who was on and he said we only give it out to members of the armed forces.
Needless to say i wont be spending any money on frames or lenses there. How do i stand can they withold the PD of my eyes??0
