    Hi

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get a lenses put in some expensive glasses I bought, I want them without a prescription but with a tint, most places are saying about £45 which I think is expensive considering you can get 2 pairs with lenses for about £75 in most places,

    thanks

It’s not only the exorbitant price of frames that bothers many people, but also the eye test itself.
An ever increasing number of premises advertising as Opticians are staffed by what I would call, for the want of another name ‘Casual Opticians’ who travel around to different premises testing eyes. If something goes wrong you are unlikely to get to see the same person to sort it out.
I had an eye test at Vision Express several years ago, (and I wont be going back) and when I received the specs, the prescription was wrong so I returned to the shop to find that the optician I saw originally was no longer there. It took a bit of explaining and a long time waiting around but eventually another Optician conceded that the prescription was wrong and the specs were replaced. But it is far better to go to a resident Optician, where you can see the same person every time.

I am in full agreement with you...i had the same problem at Optical express and the optician treated the test like an exam...as in school exam...it was horrible then when i got the prescription i sent it off to selectspecs who got it wrong then corrected the problem and i confirmed this with Optical express (of course with the smirking and rudeness necessary to a person who buys glasses online!) but they refused to consider thatthe prescription was wrong...fast forward 4 months and i decided to try another test a Tesco...where surprise surprise- wrong prescription. I have written a long rude letter to Optical express and expect no response as it is almost 10 months later and they will no doubt call it a change in my own eyes!
I am too scared to try online again so i'm getting my glasses from tesco with the double up promotion hey have on now. At least the total cost will still be £80 for 2 pairs so not complaining too much when a BOGOF elsewhere is always £150 despite free coating blah blah etc.

The guy on ebay has excellent feedback and cillaryblue seem to be popular on these pages. The last prescription I have is from D&A done in December 2009 so no problems there.

    Any thoughts?
    Buy for value not cost.

  • I ordered prescrition reading sunnies from Glasses4all on 14th of August. They were a straightforward prescription but I did want an anti glare coating. I have heard nothing back & no glasses yet. I have contacted them by both email & phone- which just rings out.
I know it is just over a week but I really need them for hols on the 30th & just wanted to confirm they would arrive.
All the research I had done said they would be prompt, I am now a bit concerned.
On my account with them it just says that my payment has been confirmed, I have not even had an email confirming order.
Anyone have any experience of them ?
  • Just a quick update ( see last post ) I just managed to speak to a very nice gentleman at glasses4all who assures me my order will be in the post tomorrow. If only they had answered the phone sooner; they are very busy. Panic over !

Don't go to Tesco Opticians, they want £85 which is a total ripoff. I was conned into having 2 pairs (single and long distance) on the understanding I could have varifocals put in at a later date for £155 but when I went to order them I was told there was an extra charge of £85 to take the old lenses out. Still trying to sort this out with them but just get told 'that's the way it is, everything is barcoded and it can't be changed'.

I have a really high prescription and so need the thinnest lenses going for my glasses. Yesterday I read a recommendation for a company called Ciliary Blue here.

I emailed with a query and within minutes they emailed back and said they would be in the office today and could answer any questions if I rang. I rang today and they were extremely helpful, a damn sight cheaper than getting my lenses on the high street, and cheaper than most of the other internet based places that offer re-glaze services.

The chap says he will post me out a box to send them my glasses and prescription and that I should have it back in 4 to 5 days. That is also way quicker than anywhere else on the internet for complex prescriptions. He also said to call at any time if I had any queries or concerns.

A :T from me so far.

I never thought I'd say this, but I had a great experience in Specsavers today!

I needed 1.74 ultra-thin lenses in a hurry (broke mine yesterday) and was quoted around £250 in other high street opticians - I didn't even try Specsavers as I assumed they'd be about the same. The cheapest I could find online was £125 but ready in 10 days. Gave Specsavers a call on the offchance - - - £90 !!!

Apparently they'll be ready in 3 days too :T

And before anyone says it, no I don't work for them. HTH someone xx

EDIT - well, they were ready in 2 days and they are fine, happy days!

Well I used to buy from glasses direct, I lost my glasses the other day and realised actually, their frames aren't that cheap compared to instore at specsavers.

Glassesdirect = £59 bogof (scratch resistant is £5 additional)
Glasses direct lowest price = £19

Specsavers = £69 bogof (price includes scratch resistant)
    Specsavers lowest price = £25

I preferred this time to actually go in and try them on, which is worth the few extra quid.

Its nice to see brick stores competing with online sites.

Another benefit is thaty I managed to get them done in maybe one day, as I said they were needed for work.

Online you could be waiting weeks at a time
