Glasses did arrive a couple of days later, seem to have been sent as soon as I phoned.

Not great service but quite good quality...
  • I have used a site zennioptical which is cheaper than any listed in the article. Huge range of frames lens and options-delivery takes about 2 weeks direct from China. Have nothing but praise for quality service and price

My beef is that due to wildly different prescriptions for each eye I need the very highest refractive index (and I like thin wire style frames).

My lenses only seem to be avail from one or 2 manfrs and a pair of lenses alone cost around £190 making the above quibbling about a few £ on the price of the frames rather irrelevant!

I'd appreciate any solid tips on how to source cheaper lenses.

I've never purchased specs online and need to read all the posts on MSE to find out more but have just seen this offer for a free pair from glasses direct - thought it may interest some of you

    http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/freepair/

From the little I've seen on this site glassesdirect.co.uk seem to be popular. Will this offer be better than going to an Asda store, as they seem to get quite good feedback too..?

Depends on the px and the finish you want(thickness), I own an opticians, what is you px if you dont mind me asking I'll let you know ref manufacturers.
My opticians is on an industrial estate and because of low overheads we keep our prices down. Single vision starting at £19 complete or 2 pairs for £36(decent quality spring loaded frames).

PS I havent mentioned our name and I'm just trying to help.(so post not deleted)

    cheers

the very highest refractive index plus 'standard' coatings eg anti scratch anti reflection

(once again low tempting prices being quoted whereas my lenses alone over £150)

Just a heads up to anyone thinking of using one of these sites: I used selectspecs.com and the glasses are rubbish. They are cheap but it's a waste of money. The pair I received were really flimsy and felt weak, unsurprisingly they broke within two weeks, having never been dropped or bent etc.
I am now trying to get a refund but they are refusing saying that tailor made glasses are not covered by distance selling regulations, which is true, but as I understand it I should get a refund under Sale of Goods for faulty/unsatisfactory goods. Am I correct?
