My husband is on medication for nocturnal seizures (had 2 within in 3 months at age 65, nothing before that). The Carbomazapine is doing a good job, but it never takes away the worry and, as posted elsewhere, he cannot swim alone; advised not to climb ladders; gets very tired so we have to be careful and share long car journeys etc. Would we qualify for Carer's Allowance does anyone think?
Am I reading this correctly his epilepsy is uncontrolled and he`s still driving?or were the last seizures more than a year ago??0 -

Does he get DLA middle or higher rate care. If yes then you can apply.

I have epilepsy and have grand mal seizures where I will have a seizure without warning and fall over.
10 years ago my employer let me go (he knew I had seizures and was on regular meds) and I asked about DLA and they turned me down, hard to prove etc ?
I am at home now with my kids and we get tax credits, but I understand thatas I am not a carer of someone with epilepsy that I don't need to inform them?
Mine also occur when I have little sleep, stressed etc0 -

Inform who? Employer, DWP? If employer you dont have to tall them anything you dont want to UNLESS it will put you and them or someone else at risk by not telling them. This isvery vauge so ie, nusery nurse = Risk to kids = tell them, office temp answering phones, no contact with clients etc etc = no risk = tell if you want. And they can not discriminate agains you if you choose to tell or not tell. I've had major problems here of the years, battled them and won every time
DWP if you want to calim anything then you have to tell them something because mind readers they are not.
As for DLA reapply, it's not that hard to prove if you are registered with a GP and recieve a regular prescription for AED's. Doc will write a report for them saying they've been prescribing for x no of years, you came in on 'these' dates complaining of seizures ir after effects. Also if under the hospital, in my case specialist Nuro hospital. They'll also be asked for a report and would say yes you attend x no of years, yes you have had an ECG showed this, that & the other.0 -

For information- Those with diagnosed epilepsy can drive if seizures are nocturnal only after they have established a pattern of ONLY having nocturnal seizures for a period of 1 year.
Those who have not got a diagnosis of epilepsy myst wait 3 years even if their seizures are nocturnal to establish the same pattern.
After 4 siezure free years after surgery I learnt to drive. I had a nocturnal seizure last year after only being legal on the road for 6 months I and had to surrender to DVLA
I get my licence back in January if I continue to have night time only, which is what they have been to date, but not holding my breath as I may get loads day time as prior pre surgery0 -
I have epilepsy and get dla middle rate for care and low for mobility, i would love to try going back to work again what help would i get because i will never travel anywhere on my own just incase i have a fit. Also would i still get dla, Any advice would be great.
Thankyou0 -
If you hold a driving licence, and have a seizure, the DVLA regulations say that you must stop driving. You are responsible for telling the DVLA and returning your driving licence. If you have no further seizures for one year you can apply to the DVLA for a new licence. Nocturnal seizures
These regulations cover all epileptic seizures, including auras/warnings, seizures where you are conscious, myoclonic jerks, and other seizures where you lose consciousness.
These regulations apply after just one seizure and even if you have not been diagnosed with epilepsy. If you have a seizure while you are asleep (a nocturnal seizure) you must also stop driving for one year from the date of the seizure. However, if during the next three years you continue to have only nocturnal seizures, you are then able to apply for a new licence. As long as seizures have only happened during your sleep over three years (and none have happened while you are awake), you can drive even though the nocturnal seizures are still happening0 -
My son who is soon to be 14 suffers from Epilepsy, he has several full seizures a week and on average about 3 facial seizures a day. He is working his way through medication and some work for a while but then seem to stop helping.
He has been tested but his Epilespy starts in several areas of the brain so surgery is not an option. We have however been informed that they feel he would benefit from Vagus nerve stimulation therapy and have asked us to look into it and in the new year go back to the hospital and discuss it. I was wondering has anyone had this surgery? has it worked?. My son has many difficulties due to being born with spina bifida and sometimes it is hard to know what to do for the best so any information would be great. Thankyou0 -
