Virgin, M&S, Tesco, Halifax have all in the past 2.5 years been an instant yes when I've done an online application with them.

Virgin limit told straight away, think the other 3 were revealed when I received the paperwork, although the Tesco one might have been straight away.
  • Yes I got an instant decision.
Obviously they need to check into you further.

I have been accepted for most of the cards I have applied for.

The only acception is Nationwide but they accepted me after 7 days.

  • I got an instant decision online from Virgin Money and a credit limit of 5.3k, so I was a little surprised when I came to transfer my balance of approx 1.5k to Halifax (which said Instant Decision online) they said they would get back to me within 7 - 10 working days.

I had some seriously adverse credit just coming up to over 6 years ago but since then I've repaired my credit rating and now have an excellent credit rating (it takes work). Only apply for credit when no other option and in last 6 years that is twice, both times accepted instantly, this is the first time I've been deferred.

DO NOT keep applying for credit cards if you get refused, although your credit report only shows a credit search (not a fail as I understand it), repeated searches indicate that you failed and keep trying again, therefore negatively affecting your credit limit. HTH

Personally, I hate instant online decisions: While an instant acceptance is nice, the other side side of the coin is an instant rejection. I would much prefer an application to be appraised by a human person and happily these days applications which cannot be accepted online are largely referred to a real person.

The only instant decision I've ever had was a rejection from First Direct when they first started which was a comparatively long time ago. They missed a good customer with that decision and perhaps I had a lucky escape!

The longest time I've waited for a decision and confirmation was Vanquis: A week to phone me to try to sell me PPI and a cash advance and tell me I had been approved, 3 weeks from time of application to receive the card and 4 weeks from time of application to receive the PIN!
