Why are some people SO an*l that they'd rather spend 20 mins of their life arguing over 1p rather than admitting they were wrong!?!

What if they're not wrong? Why should they admit it then?

What if the pump was faulty and was leaking very slowly, so it had just !!!!!! 1p of the guys money into the ether whilst he was waiting to pay for his fuel?

Why should he give the garage more money for having faulty equipment.

If it was me, I'd pay the cash, even if I knew I was in the right, although I might mention the point to the teller. But if I felt like arguing the principle, there's no way I'd let anyone else pay the garage the 1p - completely defeats the point.

I've certainly had it where I've lost a penny whilst shaking the hose - no pressure on the trigger at all, so I wouldn't be so quick to assume the guy's lying for the hell of it (exactly why would he do that, anyway?)

Anyway, on subject, I always like to have "memorable numbers" when I buy fuel, so they're easily recognisable on my statements - 51.51 is a favourite, more recently 55.55 has come up a bit, I tend to think of £50 on the nose a bit like "bullseye" too. :)

    I go for 33.33 or 34.56

How do these people get on with grocery shopping, surely they don't walk around Tesco until their basket totals £xx.00 exactly. Do they? No, so why do they then go to buy petrol and mince around with trying to stop the pump bang on xx.00

It would have been picked up in the daily legal checks the forecourt need to carry out by law

Again, maybe its customer not the equipment, 9 times out of 10 it was the customers fault, It has happened to my boss and checked the equipment was fine

    It happens.

I would thank you for telling me and take a look see if theres anything obviously wrong, its good go know of any issues that occur

Its not the cashiers fault, if its a supermarket talk to a duty manager

Whatever comes out of the handle you pay for, its got a sensor so the Wayne Dresser bloke told me today, You would be surprised what lies people come out with to get free petrol or money back like "None has gone in my tank, I only put £1.50 in and its not made the needle go to the top I want free fuel now"

Would you kick off if you knew it had gone over by a penny? Not a dig but serious question

As I said before, I'd probably mention it, then pay up.

But of course, that's if it's not my fault...which is what I'm getting at.

If I put the hose back in position, look up to check the amount and it says £10.00 - I expect to be charged £10. If I get to the cashier and they asked me for £10.01, I'd mention that it only said £10 once I'd replaced the hose...

But for you to say that's my fault...I'm not sure how it can be, exactly - I've not touched the thing. If I said "it said £10 when I left it" and you turn around and say "oh, ok, we'll get someone to double check that pump", I'd be like "cool, here's my card..." on the other hand, if you turn around and say "Oh yeah, that's your fault" then you'd better believe I'm not paying that 1p. Attitude works both ways - if you start off trying to place blame, I'll do the same thing.

Out of curiosity, what would *you* do in that instance?

What if the cashier asked for £10.10? What if they asked for £20?

How much more than the price on the pump do they have to ask for before you mention something? How much before you start to kick off?

I would, however, always ask to speak to the manager almost immediately. I've worked retail myself, I know a) cashiers get enough crap and b) they really don't have that much power, anyway - so not much point getting at them about it.
