  • make sure aswell if you do have long curtains that when your radiators are on you put the curtains behind the rads, otherwise the heat doesn't deflect into the room properly.

 Typical B&Q price for a bit of plastic! I think we might have one somewhere in storage so I'll hang on and see if it re-appears.

It is a metal one, so not quite as bad, but still!!!

I've read my meter today - last week we used 122 units, so quite a bit more than my 104 target!

I've started saving leccy already. The dishwasher emitted a burning electric type smell  on Wednesday, so is out of action untill the weekend, when DH is going to have a look at it. Given the age of the machine it could be terminal, :( Think it is about time that the kids learnt the art of washing dishes by hand ;)

    Great challenge everyone,
If anyone is interested I have developed an excel sheet that works out how much money you will be paying for gas & electricity, all you have to do is put your meter readings in, also you will need to change the unit prices in the formula boxes, I have put comments boxes in so you know which ones to change, to refelct the charges you are paying for each unit. If anyone would like a copy please PM me and I will send you a copy.

[/list]Hi pandapaws, I'd like to join in too please. I'll come back with the readings tomorrow(ok, later today!).

I'd just like to say that the above idea should only be used by those who have COLD WATER fish and only for a minimum amount of time as we can't let our pets suffer while trying to lower our bills.

For all those who own Tropical fish, the pumps and heating MUST stay on day AND night and only ever be switched off when you're doing the regular water change.

Can't think of any more savers though pandapaws, I think you've pretty much covered them all. Well done on this, it's a great idea.

    Sue

You never did come back with those meter readings lol :P

    hi,

just need a little info with my maths

we have a fridge freezer its quite old not sure what energy rating it is,

it says in it that it uses 95Watts.

    that should be per hour.

    so 95 * 24 = 2280 thats around 2.28Kw per day. which is alot

to work out a year i did

    2280 * 365 = 832200 which is around 832.2Kw a year.

that cant be right, can it ?

    thanks in advance
  • In the early 80's I knew more money was going out than coming in. Electricity had been privatised and was reasonable, in fact it hasn't gone up dramatically, like now, for 20yrs.
In those days I knew what used the most electricity even though everyone was buying tumble dryers, etc. I felt I was a second class citizen even though my husband was a Head of Department teacher.
Learning from a necessity. If you have a conservatory or glass/plastic covered roof put a clothes maiden or a victorian pulley type rails dryer. Dries clothes in one/two days in spring, summer and early autumn. Otherwise use radiators or put rails in warm airing cupboard, or just use clothes maiden in front of fire. In fact I saw someone buying one from Tescos today.

Just updated the list of challengers - a few people have expressed an interest but not said they're joining so if you are and your name's not on the list, just give me a shout.

ifti, the maths sounds right to me, I think. I've just bought a new freezer which has Energy Efficiency rating is B, and it uses 278kwh per year so if yours is older and less efficient then it's quite possible. Have you got/could you borrow one of the meters you plug in which tell you how much energy you're using? I got one in Aldi a few weeks ago but not opened the packet yet :o .

Sparky0107, thanks for the offer of spreadsheet...I LOVE spreadsheets! Will PM you in a mo.

Bree, our old dishwasher did that - came home one day and the house was filled with smoke which we eventually traced to the dishwasher. (Indesit, 13 months old). It turned out that the water valve had broken or something, so there was no water coming into the dishwasher but the heating element was working anyway and dry-burning the food that had dripped onto it. House stunk for ages. We were really lucky it didn't cause a fire. Skipped it, wasn't going to take that chance again.

Only the weekend to go for me and the others who joined on Monday. Lets hope the kids enjoy their half term sitting in the dark with no TV/computers :rotfl: .
