 My elderly mother has asked 3 times for a form, obviously BT hate this scheme ! OFCOM time to kick a**e i think !!
  • BT have told me today that due to a technical problem they will not be sending out application forms for Basic until March. Speaking to OFCOM as well they were not aware of this issue !
  • can i use this basic tariff with a separate unmetered ISP account (ISP will not be BT)..

    Broadband is certainly ok.

But if you are on a dial up it will probably be worth considering upgrading to one of the inclusive cheap broadband packages for a fixed month fee - ISP independent, for faster speeds, etc. You'll probably save - even paying a monthly broadband subscription though. (approx 13 quid/quarter +calls, compared to the standard line rental +your calling package) Check the broadband forums here.

But ask them (good luck!) about dial up and any BT charges - I'm sure they say as it's not really a 'basic' service then as your phoneline will in use quite a lot. Note their expensive call connection charges of 2.93p/call and 9.78p a minute, once the £1.50/month included allowance is exceeded.

As stated in this thread before, BT Basic isn't economical for anythig above a low call useage ......
  • i spoke with bt basic folk yesterday. been chasing an application form since middle of january. they keep telling they got technical problems. they are now saying form should be with me by end of month and tariff will be backdated to original application date.
  • Well looks like the second application form has *conveniently* got lost again ... third form and counting!!

If nothing appears this time the manure is really going to start hitting some BT Basic Fans.

    Hi,

I have been reading all the postings re BT Basic. I have the same problems. I don't suppose it will do any good but I have just sent an email to the CEO of BT (copy pasted below) with a cc to watchdog at BBC TV. I have been trying to get onto BT Basic since Jan 5th and like you just been getting the runaround, if I can be of any help re the regulator please pm me.

    Dear Mr Livingstone

I am writing to you in desperation as, along with many more people, it is proving to be impossible to get my account switched to BT Basic. I applied and was given an order number (1738042) on 5th January 2009, told the application form would be with me within 14 days - and since then have received nothing, I have called the help-line 6 times since but calls to the help-line are met with promises of resolution, "within a few days" but NOTHING happens. I know many hundreds more people are having these problems and there is a general feeling that BT is dragging their heels as they don't really want to provide this service, its just because the regulator is making you.

I am continuing to run up a bigger bill than I can afford, now my latest call today to the help-line results in me being told that I will "be connected by end of March"

Are you intending to backdate the new lower charges to the date of application for customers as we are paying for a higher service than we want at present due to BT's slowness. It cannot really be impossible for BT to send out forms and I know this has been going on for months. The "Money saving expert.com" forum is full of examples of this apparent inability by BT to provide the BT Basic service for vulnerable customers. Many complaints have also been made to BBC TV Watchdog.

Please look into this, and please get back to me to confirm if the new service charges will be backdated to the date people asked for the service (In my case Jan 5th 2009) and that I will get on to it by the end of March as the latest promise claims.

    Yours Sincerely

Just received a reply to my email. I quote "
I am sorry about the problems you have had. I will ask someone to look
into this and respond to you.

    Ian Livingston"

I am sure its just a minion who has actually replied but just maybe (long shot) it may get some action!
