You make all the Mods out to be First-Come-First-Servers!

Let me tell you how I mod......I vet the messages to weedle out the spammers, we get many every day, I edit most of the titles of the posts to make them comply with the rules and to make the Posts more readable. I then post them to the board.

At the end, which can be up to an hour later as we have a very busy group, I will then go back to any I would like and place my request like everyone else.

If you think asking after an hour is too soon..... then you are not on my Freecycle!!!

There's a lot of work to do being a Mod. We don't just hit send to every post that needs to be Moderated you know. You should see the pages and pages we have to know about to be a Mod!

"How many offers go to the first person to reply?" you ask?
How should I know! I'm not obsessed with getting something. I ask for my name to go in with all the others that they will consider.

DON'T LUMP ALL MODS AS THE SAME THANKS!
Maybe you have a problem with your mods and you should be addressing the issue with the site owner of your local Freecycle if you don't think you are getting a fair deal.

    ===========

I'm now going to go hide in the corner........am waiting for all the comments and daggers at my above comment.....better still, i'm off to MODERATE!! lol!!!

Sorry but is it me your talking to ?as you quoted my name:confused:

Just a thought. Some Freecycle sites are adopting a Fair Offer policy, see below:

"Fair Offer Policy: I agree to take a period of time to see what
responses I get before deciding who to give item(s) to. This gives
members on Daily Digest, or those who don't have continual access to
the Internet a fair chance to reply."

So everybody wins!! (or has an equal chance anyway!)

I'm an avid recycler and Freecycler, but I'm somewhat more cynical now than when I first joined Freecycle. Certainly with my local group (Gloucester) it seems to have degenerated recently into a general Wish List for some greedy people. And nearly always for large, expensive items. Often specifying 'excellent or as new condition only wanted'! And, of course, there is nothing to stop Wanted advertisers taking all of the things that are offered and selling them on. I've been caught out like this - giving something decent away and finding it at a car boot a week later. Boo.

But I'll still keep trying, as I think the concept is excellent, despite those who are abusing it.

    TPSJRM,
Can agree that your local group has degenerated lately, (i.e. specific- and expensive, models of mobile phones, as new furniture in cream or brown leather or suede etc,) but just take a look at some of the "Wants" on the group at the spa town just up the Golden Valley! Considering the town's motto translates as "Health and Learning," the levels of literacy can be pretty poor too!
A few caustic comments have appeared from the genuine Freecyclers who are getting cheesed off, so folk are generally pretty aware.
Have found the bigger the group, the more problems by the law of averages. Out in the woods the community is much smaller and we don't seem to experience the same level of problems.
    Your final quote,
"But I'll still keep trying, as I think the concept is excellent, despite those who are abusing it."
    is particularly relevant.

Some interesting points of view have been discussed recently, all of which I can sympathise with to a certain extent. However, just thought I'd share these posts on a local site with you.

Members of this site must reckon the fairies are in generous spirits!
(Have ***ed names & locations rather than "Name & Shame!" The comments after each were my gut reaction to the post and my personal opinion.)

    Wanted......please. Portable DVD player

I am desperately trying to persuade my daughter that she would like a
trip down to Cornwall this weekend, but she's not keen due to the long
journey. Please, please, please does anyone have an in-car portable DVD
player that they no longer use,
I would really appreciate it, I'm a single mum and my wages dont stretch to on the spot luxuries.... .lol.

    Thank you for looking.

Why doesn't she tell her daughter to be grateful for the chance of a holiday by the sea instead of trying to reward her sulking brattiness at others’ expense?!

    16a.

HI HAS ANYONE GOT AN OLD SAT NAV THEY NO LONGER NEED.AS I COULD REALLY
DO WITH ONE BUT CANT AFFORD ONE THANKS ***.

Yeah, me too, but I don’t expect others to fund such an extravagant “Want!” (Clever inventions these road-maps by the way, try ‘em. They’re not rocket science!)

I’d also like a camper van or new car & caravan- full tank of petrol please, fancy phone, high-spec. laptop, and jeans that make my bum look like a peach- don't have the audacity to post tho'!

However, they’re beginning to bite back….

    re-offered: Toshiba p100 laptop manual - ***

    Posted by: ************************************************** *****************

Re-offered due to a vast number of time wasters, people with the inability
to read and people with a huge list of sick/disabled children who it would
    be ideal for.

This is the MANUAL for the popular toshiba p100 laptop...

It might be useful to somebody..?!

To be collected in town centre *** area.

    My mind is boggled!
Also, not a single one of these, (– except the “Offer,” interestingly!) follows the agreed format of “Wanted/ item / location.” Surely the mods could limit them on these grounds alone?

That said, I still think the ethos of Freecycle is basically sound, and the majority of folk well-meaning. As ever, it's that small minority that take the proverbial.

The same site, and a more recent gem...

hi just wondering if any1 got and wii
things ie games they no longer need
or want got my son the concell
but cant afford any games for him

A combination of illiteracy and greed that still, despite the others, shocks and appalls. Actually did a search on the user and to be fair, they have made a couple of offers, but their "Wants" include a Quinny "buggie." I was tempted to offer them a little umbrella-fold lightweight buggy we've used for our Grandson and point out it'd do exactly the same job!

  • Hi I am new to all of this so please forgive me if I do this wrong...
Anyway, I wondered if you knew about the wonderful freecycle?
    http://www.freecycle.org/

It is a series of groups local to a particular area, where people put up information about things they no longer need, and generally speaking you can just contact the person offering the iem and then go and collect it from their house.
It is really amazing, I have given away a dishwasher, a tumble drier, some furniture, an old VCR and a fishtank through my local freecycle. In return I have received some out of print books I was after, loads of boxes and crates for when I moved house, and a 3 piece suite for a friend in need.
You join a local group by registering with your email address, and can then browse recent posts, or put up a "wanted" request.
My local site has had many amazing things advertised, including furniture, bikes, computers, baby stuff (eg prams, cots etc).
I find it offers freebies in two ways
    1) getting free stuff that you want/need
    2) Giving unwanted items away without having to hire a car or skip to get rid of the items.

If you already know of freecyle please forgive my eagerness to share my find with you.:A
  • @martins doll - ok, erm, how do I do that and what is sigs?
