I get loads of these in my hotmail account. Natwest, canadian banks, ebay (when i dont even use my hotmail) etc.
This used to happen to me and on this laptop I don't have a Hotmail account but I do have a Yahoo account and that too seems to attract a lot of Spam. I seemed to remember someone saying that Google mail is the best but I have not got around to having my AOL account directed there.0 -
Oh I'm sure it won't be very much, bet you can't wait to get a lovely new Beamer or Merc?
Last week I was informed that I'd won the 'Toyota China' ? lottery, 2 days before it they said it was to be drawn.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I wrote a filter (in Mac Mail) that directs any incoming email which commences with the words "Dear Valued Customer" straight to the Trash, unopened.

you'd now be better off living in one.

Another filter that I find extremely effective is "Send to Junk" (not the more lethal "Trash") if "Sender is not in my Previous Recipients". That one diverts huge amounts of spam.
I also think it's wise to have a filter that sends automatically to "Trash" those spooky emails that display no Sender, no Subject and appear to contain nothing.
Over the years, I've built up a substantial list of filters that all incoming emails have to negotiate, successively and successfully, if they're to get their way into my Inbox. It's a complex thing to set up because if you get just one filter wrong, or in the wrong place in the batting order, everything will then start going to the wrong place. But it's a worthwhile thing to do and virtually no spam whatsoever reaches my Inbox.

There may be a hidden payload that will execute using an ActiveX exploit to install a key logger, a trojan or some other malware to elicit passwords and account details of anything stored on your PC. Best to not open any such attachments. If you do, it's the Malwarebytes, HiJackthis treatment PDQ0 -
But, in contrast, nothing untoward whatsoever is likely to happen if Miss-spent is using a Mac.
And what, pray, in the posting:Miss-spent wrote: »

leads you simply to assume that Miss-Spent is unwise enough to be using a PC and Windows?

Nothing, but others who are would not be as lucky as a Mac or a Linux/Unix user, in similar circumstances.
And what leads you to assume I am using Windows?0
