Excessive Speeding Fine - Can I Appeal?

I think anewman meant that speeding by 20 mph over the speedlimit in a 30mph zone OUGHT to carry a custodial sentence... If it had been in a residential area I also have wholeheartedly agreed. As it was a dual carriageway and there was no actual works happening on the road at the time then personally I think it's a little bit less serious than speeding in a built up area where people walk next to the road and children might emerge from driveways and potentially get hit... Being hit at 30 is serious, being hit at 50 is more than likely fatal for a child. I've seen the damage a 30 mph impact can have... and the driver wasn't even at fault. I dread to think what the effects would have been if he'd been speeding (which the police proved he wasn't)...
Not saying speeding is ever right, but there is definitely in my view different degrees of seriousness depending on actual speed and location of the offence...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

you must have expected to be lambasted by a few posters when you posted such a question.
just a footnote, dont know how long your wife has been driving but if she has just passed her test in the last two years and has a total value of 6 points on her licence then it is automatically revoked.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I'm pretty sure you'll get 6 points for 47 in a 30, hence why its gone to court and the size of the fine.
im not, i got done for doing no less than 50 in a 30, i think this means that they could not prove my exact speed, but i knew i was speeding so paid the fine, £60 and 3 points.
maybe different in scotland, though i doubt it....work permit granted!0 -

My wife received a Speeding notice back in May (47mph in a 30mph zone)which she filled in and returned. We then received the follow up which was again filled in and posted the following day.
We then heard nothing more until last month when we received a court summons for not providing details etc. We rang the courts and explained the above to them. Their advice was to fill in the courts paperwork explaining this and also send in her driving licence. She did this and filled in the 'guilty by post' areas.
The driving licence has since been returned with no explanation and today we have received a Notice Of Fine and collection order for £298 to be paid by 4th November!
£240 Fine
£15 Costs
£43 costs
There is no explanation as to why it is this much or whether or not she has received any points on her licence.
Is there anything we can do i.e. appeal, as we simply cannot afford this or feel we should pay this much.
Thanks in advance for your help
It amazes me how many people don't read threads, just jump in, feet first.
Is some of you bothered to read the OPs post I think you will see he's asking about appealing because they sent the forms back twice, then get a court summons.
I agree with the OP, that amount seems OTT, for starters, the fees added to the origanal fine would not be there if they had had the letter back the first time. Please do not feed the Trolls!0
