Hello Jox
Don't worry that you will be admitting defeat if you go on incapacity benefit.
When you are on incapacity benefit or recognised as having a disability (it is important to get it officially recognised), then there are programs that can help ease you back into work, and give you advice. JSA, from what I can remember, seems to be about pushing you back into work as quickly as possible. Whereas you need support.
Try doing a course, there are so many out there and many of them have discounts or are free for people on benefits. Do something that sounds interesting but might be fun too.0 -

Hi,and welcome to MSE,just a thought have you applied for DLA(this is avaliable if you work or not),if you havent i suggest you consider doing so,but do get help to fill in the forms from welfare rights or cab
I`m sorry you feel so down, and wish you well, and remember we are here to help wherever we can:beer:0 -
You could have continued to claim DLA and work.0

i havent claimed any benifits because i didnt feel i was entitled to any i have put up with the pain since 7 or 8 years old having pain in my leg has always been normal to me and all iv known is to just deal with it get on and work i push my self hard iv worked through the pain my doctor has told me i will need a hip replacement but only you can tell us when you need it he said we can do it rite now if you really wanted but as your so young you dont want it now then have to have it again in your 30's and maby again after than from now untill then my hip is only going to get worse and im at the point now where iv been thru the dragging my self to work putting up with the pain to the point where its gradulay deteriated to the point where i cant walk to the shop without been in pain and its not just aches and pains very discomfating pain sometimes to the point i cant walk.iv done the self test for dla and that said i should be entitled to it but it was something like £42 which is less than i get on jobseekers! so whats the point :-(0

Hi Jox
It may sound crazy but have you thought of actually having the operation done now especially as you are in so much pain? I realise that at some point in the future you will have to have it done again but you need to concentrate on how you are feeling now. I think you are immensely brave putting up with your arthritic condition and the pain associated with it.
You should claim DLA because you can get that if you are working or not and it shouldnt impact on any benefits that you get. Instead of claiming JSA see if you can speak to a disability employment advisor at the jobcentre and see about claiming incapacity benefit.
I can understand the suicidal thoughts and the feelings of paranoia and although I am not a medically qualified person nor am I a psychiatrist, feel that these could be down you not going out and being alone. See your GP and tell him everything and that way he/she can help you and as others have said if he/she disagrees see someone else or badger them until they give in.
Good luck and if you fancy a chat come and see us on the Disability & Dosh board.
I dont know what sort of work you did before you had to give it up but have you thought of working from home? You can set up your own business at home and all you would need is a computer and a mobile phone. You can find out about being a disabled business person from the Disabled Entrepreneurs (I will google it and come back with the web link)
http://www.disabled-entrepreneurs.net/
While you're here, why not come over to the Disability & Dosh board (its new on this forum) and you can have a chat to us, we're all really friendly and are very supportive.0 -

The point is that DLA will be paid in ADDITION to any other benefits,or salary, its tax free and not means tested
My advice for what its worth would be to apply, and like I said earlier if you can get help from welfare rights or cab to fill the forms in then all the better0 -
id rather put off having the hip replacment as when im older i dont want to be having big operations if i wait i may only have to have it done once.i know getting out more would help my depression i dont have anywhere to go i have not 1 freind other than my g/f i cant walk to the buss stop with out been in agony although i have done it manny times im sick of been in agony doing it a couple of years ago i used to enjoy going into town looking around the shops i cant do that anymore theres no way i could walkaround town with my hip with benifits its my lack og knowlage of what i can claim dla and incapasity is that rite? is there any other benifits i would be entitled to?0

You might get housing benefit, you will get a reduction on your council tax for being disabled too.
Ring social services to see if they have a bus service that you can use such as Ring & Ride and see if they can provide you with means to get about e.g. a disability scooter. I know that some large shopping centres have disability scooters that they loan out so that you can access their stores - one that springs to mind is Merry Hill in Dudley but I am sure there are others with similar schemes.0 -
Your GP sounds to be a bit out of date.
Hip replacements are being done on younger people all the time. My daughter had both done when she was 35. I wasn't even 50 when I had my left one done, and the point is, they can be revised. I had the other one done in 1987, that's 21 years ago, and it is still going strong. They can last a very long time.
Get some up-to-date information on total hip replacements and then go to see a GP who's a bit more modern and can give you up-to-date information. Do not suffer pain needlessly. No one wants that nowadays - there are things that can be done. If it's affecting your quality of life, then get something done about it.
