    Of course it's a scam!!!!

Retailers are still giving away free carrier bags, Morrisons / Sainsbury to name but 2.

5p for a carrier bag which costs no more than 1p is a scam, and I for one refuse to buy into there game.
But if they only charged you 1p (you'll probably find they each cost them about 0.1p) that wouldn't put you off using them. 5p seems to be your level before you presumably carry your shopping or bring your own bag, so it's worked insofar as there's at least one less plastic bag out there.

However, I'd very slightly agree with you in that I don't think businesses should be charging a pseudo-tax because they'll always be accused of profiting from them. I'd prefer a proper tax on them, say 20p a bag, 18p to the Treasury, 2p to the shop for collecting it.

I'll give it another 12-18 months before no major supermarkets give out plastic bags.

    Rubbish!

Do you know what scam even means?

    scam (skabreve.gifm) Slang
    n. A fraudulent business scheme;

I don't see how charging for carriers is fraudulent?

Other retailers who don't do something about their use of carriers will be forced to by the government. If they haven't done anything yet they'll soon have to!

Plastic bags are bad for the environment and go into landfill and take years to rot. By pricing them at 5p, they're hoping that people think "pah, i'm not buying into their game" and bring their own bag, thus that's one less bag going into landfill! So technically, you've played right into their hands!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Theres nothing ingenious about keeping a receipt, in fact i would say until your 100% happy with the product, keep hold of it (common sense), even THEN common sence would tell me to put it away in a box or draw "JUST IN CASE", because the basic rule of thumb for any purchase, no proof equals no refund.

Okay, I came on here to see if TK Maxx's returns policy had been mentioned, but this thread seems overly concerned with whether a receipt was kept or not. Well, I bought my niece something from TKM a little while ago, posted it to her the next day for her birthday, and got a call from her mother to say it wasn't the right size, could I change it? No problem, and I had already kept the receipt safe for this.

She didn't post it back quickly because she's partially disabled, and by the time it arrived, more than 14 days had passed. When I took it back, with the receipt, for an exchange - not a refund - I learned that they won't accept any returns at all, under any circumstances, receipt or not, after their 14 day limit. I've got to keep the item and get my niece something else. As I said to the store supervisor, it wouldn't be at TK Maxx.

So it may be within the law, but these circumstances can't be extraordinary, and it's worth remembering that if you may not be able to get the item returned within 14 days, you'll end up stuck with it. There's no flexibility and no explanation. Go there because they're cheap, but don't expect customer service to amount to much.

It's worth quoting the returns policy from the back of their receipts in full:
    "Love Me or Return Me"

Shopping is like love: you just know when it's right. Hence, our 14 day "Love Me or Return Me" refund or exchange policy. We reckon within 2 weeks you probably know whether you're in love with your purchase or not. If you're not, just return it in original condition with this receipt for an exchange or refund. It's quick, it's simple and you never have to say, "It's not you, it's me".

Quirky, a little bit humorous, it's even written in a heart shape - they've really worked at making this sound customer-friendly, haven't they? They must have overlooked the fact that they'd sell less unwanted stuff if people actually knew they had to get it back in time. No more TKM for me.

There's no reason for them to take anything back, it's only a service to their customers that they allow stuff back after 2 weeks.

There has to be a cut off for anything, and you missed the boat.

Again your fault rather than the shops.

I bought an umbrella from TK Maxx about a month ago. The first time I used it, it broke - it had literally been open for about all of two minutes.

I keep all my receipts and only get rid of them when I no longer have the item - however, despite going through my box of receipts twice, I couldn't find it!

Anyway, I decided to try and take it back but was prepared for a bit of an argument, however, they were as good as gold and gave me back my money despite not having a receipt or any other proof of payment - I couldn't remember how much it was, I told them either £5.99 or £6.99 and they gave me £5.99 in cash.

A few days later when I was looking at the record of items I buy, I noticed that I had in fact only paid £4.99 for it. :o

why are we singling out TK MAXX? Most shops won't return anything without a receipt and have policies which dictate how long you have to return the items. M&S can be up to 90 days, and not at all, if it's a sale item (not forgetting your statutory rights of course)

you could also try showing them your bank statement if you paid by card, within the 14 days.

some would probably go out of business if they took clothes back whenever we felt like returning them, maybe a year later when after a cold summer, and putting on/losing a few pounds the item didn't sit right, and ended up on the rail waiting for the moths.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

    And I deny this where?

The point is, their "service" is not worth the name. There are circumstances where returning goods within two weeks is very difficult. And the wording of their returns policy makes them sound as if they're on our side when they plainly aren't. At the minimum, it's low-level deception.
