  • Sorry I have some more silly questions! I just read that a dog in heat can scratch through doors to get out, please tell me she won't get out of the house?! Also, do Vets give painkillers after? Does it hurt them? Spaying I mean! lol

No, she will be fine!! I have never known a b1tch be that bothered, male dogs can be a bit more persistent, but Ive never known one go to those sort of extremes!!! All the accidental matings I have known of have been wehre one or both dogs have been kenneled outside or running loose.

The vets tend to give a 48 hour slow release painkiller, I guess they are a bit sore afterwards (as you would imagine) but the hardest thing is normally trying to keep them inactive whilst they heal - they seem to have forgotten all about it after a few days!!

My dog had dissolving stitches, whilst my mums had to go back to the vets after ten days to have her out, but she tried to bite the vet  so my mum had to take her home and bribe her with sardines for tea and pick the stitches out with tweezers, which worked fine!

Hiya, Its important to realise that a dogs season isnt much like a human period - unlike us its their most fertile time and lasts for about three weeks, with the bleeding really only being present in the first week. My mums dog recently had a season - was rehomed by my mum in april, had a season in june and has since been speyed.

In that time she was walked normally but on lead and didnt have any serious problems from males (although a young male bull mastiff seems to have a bit of a crush on her in general - however, she is a lurcher so he cant catch up with her! lol! - but my mum kept her to areas where she wasnt so likely to meet lots of dogs). When she got to the stage where she started finding the chaps attractive she became a bit loopy - really fussy, wanting attention and sticking her bum towards random people! tart!!:rotfl:

However, this stage only lasted for about a week, then if you allow another week for everything to settle back down they are soon back to normal!

So no scratching thru doors then? lol I registered her with the practice that will spay her today, decided to stay with them as they too will claim direct from insurers in special circumstances & i'll be taking out a policy & paying for the whole year up front once her free insurance expires so they'll know it's all paid up ok. Did your Mum's dog recover ok? I hope she's not in pain, i've only had cats spayed & not even the one I have as she was already spayed when I took her on.

I'll keep her off walks for the three weeks & then hope she's done! Knowing my luck i'd walk her thinking it's safe & she'd get caught! The Vets said April will be fine to spay her & it'll be £111.96 I think as they give 20% off the cost, but if she's under 12.5kg it'll be cheaper. Then I could claim £60 back from the rescue but I won't.

lol with the cats i've had done i've always taken them out myself if i've been sure it looks healed & ok, not recommended but i'm trained with horses & had to do it so as long as it's a calm cat I do it myself! I guess if she tries to bite they'll just whack a muzzle on her though.

Keeping her inative will be easy! She's a couch potatoe & sleeps all day. I was also gonna ask what you all do with your dogs when not walking, leave them to sleep? lol won't she get bored? I play with her & that but even that doesn't fill a day!
  • She will be fine -there is a small risk with any operation of course, but the risk of speying is less than the risk of pyometria for older b1tches, and saves them the risks and complications of pregnancy, so all in all its a good risk to take.

Yes, my mums dog was fine, dozy and sleepy for the first day or two but good after that.

Mine was speyed the day before I collected her from rescue and it didnt seem to bother her one bit, she never touched her stitches.

My mums dog did keep trying to lick her wound so we had to keep the buster collar on whenever she wasnt supervised and had to watch her like a hawk when we were with her - but distracting her or saying 'no!' normally stopped her.

ETS - just read your last post - yes, dogs sleep a heck of a lot, and she is probably still recovering from the stress of kennels and is a bit underweight so the sleeping will probably do her good.

Ah good, I mean I sleep alot! But I was thinking wow she sleeps all the time is she bored, I mean there's nothing for her to do, no other dog to chase or play with & without walks right now too, tho i'm taking her out more often up to the roadside & just over the garden bit & round the flats & stuff. I tried to remember with the ex's Mum's dogs but there were two of them so they had another dog to play with & could run about. I don't want her bored all the time!

She's definitely being spayed unless for some unknown reason the Vet says she can't be when she's seen next month but the kennels Vet has seen her & no problems so I can't see any issues. lol she might not fit into the kitchen with those collars on I can't even get a baby/dog gate to fit the doors so narrow, still, I guess I fit thru! lol

I gave up on the collars with mine - they didnt seem to be that worried about the stitches luckily. Both of my girls who were speyed came trotting out on a lead when I went to get them, very keen to get home. She probably sleep that day except when she wants a wee, you can help her out and back. Dont let her jump on and off beds and so on. But Ive never actually heard of a dog splitting the stitches open :) So try not to worry.

If shes got some safe toys to play with and a window to look out of and perhaps a radio on, she probably doesnt get bored. They have different aspirations to people. Obviously spend as much time as possible with her and taking her out but dogs do sleep - its their nature, to be ready for hunting (that is, you taking her running).

Aww I messed up, I went into the kitchen & she'd cr!!!ed, idk when, I didn't see her do it at first I didn't know what it was it was old looking! Maybe that explains why she didn't want to go when I took her out last! But what I did was picked it up in front of her, have I !!!!!!ed it up now?

I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose it's her first in the two weeks i've had her & normally she'd go while on walks but she's not getting any as she's in season, she goes in the end when I take her out but is easily distracted by anything! Like earlier she was ready to go then saw something, no idea what & *forgot*

At least on walks she has time to go & look at whatever she sees! Will this mean she keeps doing it now she saw me pick it up? I didn't say anything or tell her off or anything, just got a bag & picked it up. I'll go & wash the floor in bio washing powder too.

I'm hoping it's not seperation anxiety, but I don't think so/hope not! I'da thought it'd start before now & be pee or runny? As in thru nerves? Is it anything to worry about or just maybe cause she didn't go while out?

You mean she accidentally had a poo? Just clean it up, make sure you the smell doesnt remain and then take her out and tell her to "wee". If you take her out every hour and tell her to "wee" and just stand there relaxed but not looking at her - she will get the message. Try to relax yourself :)

I take her every 3-4hrs she doesn't need hourly, I think it's cause I might have been asleep or something lmao her first in 2 weeks isn't bad! (She can't blame the cat it was too big :rotfl: )
We have to go round the carpark soon too to find the neighbours missing cat, i'll train her to be a Springer Spaniel yet! Mind you I daren't yet cause the postie is coming back with a delivery I didn't answer for (Dog won't bark when the door goes!) & knowing my luck he'd turn up in the two seconds I was the other side of the flats! lmao

The cat is playing silly !!!!!!s not coming in now! I'm sure she likes me running after her!
  • no, she will be fine, dont worry about a one off poo or her seeing you pick it up - thats more important advice if you have a dog that isnt well housetrained - I think yours is, but just misjudged when she needed to go!
