It must be awful living with people you don't get on with, but do they help you at all? When you're not well it's the worst thing to live around people that you really don't want in your space. You share the bills in the house do you?
Very much the opposite. One particular housemate had a habit of waking me at three-thirty in the morning to let him in because he kept forgetting his keys - and he'd bang on the window and shout until I woke up, knowing very well that I have difficulty sleeping well at the best of times and waking me up at that time of night would mean I'd be useless for anything the next day. All three of my housemates had the habit of leaving the kitchen messy and more or less forcing me to do all the tidying up after all of us if I wanted it hygienic...
Don't worry too much about living on your own - it's certainly going to be better than living with people you don't get on with! Is there gas central heating in the flat? Water meter? I am asking because of your worries about utility bills.

If I remember some of your posts, don't you have to have the heating on a lot of the time and are home a lot? Just asking because I live on my own in 2 bedroom house, here 24/7, have the heating on 24/7 these days and based on this I could give you details of my monthly DD on utility bills if you like. It may give you an idea and ease your worries.

It really is the utility bills that worry me more than anything else; I'm not afraid of living by myself. I like to have my own space.

I don't know if there is a water meter or not. I've never had one, so I'm not entirely sure what to look for. The flat has under-floor electric heating, so I'm told, under tiled floors, radiators in each room and a boiler; I think the heating is all-electric as best I could tell. But I'm not certain of that - I should know by tomorrow, when I go to talk to the housing office about it, they would know. And yes to both of those things. I also have to add the cost of unlimited broadband internet into my calculations as I use the internet a lot - it's my lifeline to the outside world more often than not. I have the heating on quite often, but not 24/7, and this is a 1-bedroom rather than a bedsit.

    Thanks :)

Ask the housing officer about water meter etc I used to be on water rates but around 4 years ago decided to put in a water meter, as a result it worked out I was paying half the amount - It can be much cheaper for one person on a water meter than being on water rates. I am now paying £19 a month for water.

I agree about broadband - it isn't a luxury for me it is a necessity as this is also my lifeline to the outside world!;)

Is the flat in the same area as you are living now? I hope you've got help to move.

    Thanks :) I'll do that.

Roughly the same area. It's about three miles away, but I do have a lot of help to move, fortunately. Couldn't do it if I didn't, but I have some great friends 'round here.

Well hope it goes well tomorrow and I'm glad you have friends to help you move. Have you been looking at broadband deals yet?
  • Dad came home from hospital today. They operated, pinned and rodded shoulder and I don't know other details but we were told they "got all the cancer".
Will find out more details later obviously but major relief.
Thanks for all support, hugs etc.

Cwta, that is wonderful news, it's awful waiting to hear the outcome of an operation like that. I'm really pleased for you.

I had a major operation 17th December, a large tumour on the bowel. It was 7th January when I had the news that it was benign - the wait was awful to be honest.

Is your father staying with you recovering from his operation?
  • Tobruk, no he'll be at home with his wife, but I'll be there quite a lot of the time when I get rid of a pesky cold I have.
How awful for you to have that long wait; must have been terrible for you! Mega hugs and relief that it was benign.

Oh Thank you Cwta, yes it was hard especially as the consultant before the op went through the possibility of Chemo, the tumour was in a place on the small bowel (over 3" in size) and couldn't see if it was attached to any other organs and I may have to have a 'bag'! The op was scary but I must say the waiting afterwards was hard, trying to prepare myself for any bad news, but the worsed was trying not to show my worries to family.

Anyway, it was extremely good news for me and was told that it was a very rare benign Lymphangioma tumour. When I was told and although told it was benign, I looked at the consultant and said "so it isn't cancer then!" Anyway, I saw him again last Thursday and he is arranging another CT scan to see if everything is ok and that he hasn't missed anything. Gosh, I hope that it will be ok.

Anyway, I'm sure it was hard for you to wait to hear how the op went for your dad, that is also exhausting. I hope his recovery is quick and he gets over it in good time. I hope he behaves himself not to do things he's not supposed to. Is he a good patient?
