Firstly I know nothing about phones..but i read a while ago that some of the new generation of phones are designed to sort of commit suicide if a hack is detected when you connect to the web. I'm sure I have got muddled somewhere but could the 'modifications' you made to it have caused the phone to die as soon as the buyer tried to access certain web sites?

if you jailbroke the iphone, the buyer has probably upgraded the software via itunes whether intenionally or not but that would brick it. did it to my missus phone when they first come out and it was a real nightmare to go back to a previous firmware update ''actually thinking about i couldnt go back i had to wait until the hackers hacked the new firmware which was a good few months - expensive brick for a month or two.

At the end of the day if he has damaged it in anyway your going to have real trouble proving it i'm afraid. Its why i gave up selling expensive items on ebay because they just attract the con men and scammers and i have better things to do with my time.

Don't understand what "jail break" is in terms of phones.

Can we summarise the full story?
    1. You bought a brand new phone from a shop. How much did you pay?
    2. You "jail broke" it. What is this? Why did you do it?
    3. You listed it on eBay straight away. Or had you done this before you bought it?
    4. You got a buyer (with an unconfirmed address) and posted it to them.
    5. The phone broke.

So what I don't get is what you are doing with this "jail breaking" and selling a one day old phone.
