Coop Bank - Unethical

THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH

A relative of mine, who shall remain nameless for reasons that will become apparent, has had his BASIC current account closed by the COOP Bank for going overdrawn once by £8.24 in an 18 month period. NO FAIR WARNING GIVEN.

The COOP Bank was informed when the account was opened that my relative suffers from severe bipolar disorder, which means that on certain occasions, he finds it impossible to carry out day to day tasks. It was during such an episode that a mistake by a 3rd party meant that a claim was made on my relatives account twice, making him overdrawn (A position COOP Bank had explained was not possible, due to the nature of his account.)

To do this is WRONG. To treat some of the most vulnerable members of society in this way is BEYOND ANY JUSTIFICATION.

The COOP Bank is UNETHICAL and DECEPTIVE.

From now on, when ever the terms "Coop Bank" and "Ethical" shall be in close proximity, the semantics of DECEPTION will rise to conscious awareness.

Any criticism of this or justification of the COOP Bank shall be considered with contempt and shall also be labeled in the same category as the COOP Bank as far as Deceptive and Unethical practices are concerned.

In this case, his disorder is irrelevant. Being bipolar doesn't come into it. Exactly what third party was this and what mistake did they make? Did you explain that to the Co-Op, or did you just let it lie? How long was the account in an overdrawn position for? Did they attempt to contact you? I won't expect an answer, as I've already earned your contempt, probably.

The fact that any person has a disorder/is a single mum/had a bad day/is under a lot of stress/might lose their job/doesn't like cheese does NOT alter the terms and conditions of an account.

...But at least they don't have any Fat Cat Shareholders.:rotfl:
  • - but not for their money investments - but just their actions with/against customers.

I've just been informed that a credit card application got rejected by a
member of staff in one of their banks - on the same day that I had physically
been present to supply documents/ID etc - the reaosn? the name on the ID
and that on the application was different. huh? I was THERE. for almost an
hour. they could have told me this whilst i was there to get another form drafted
up and completed. I dont make a habit of visiting far off places (they only have one single branch in this area) for such banking fun.

..oh, and then, without any communication with myself, they re-did the application with correct names to run through a credt agency.

and joy of joys, they use Experian - one of the worst and unethical credit agencys this world has ever seen - so bad they actually put FALSE information into
their details if they dont have any details.

I've been asked to update my record to complete a successful application - excuse me? I have to PAY to fix things at experian? a company that only exist because people have to pay them money for searches and pay them money to actually get the details into their database? thats not ethical either. nice business plan for them though.

result? I'm keeping with my credit cards that I've got from fairly openly unethical banks. If they are the only ones happy to lend me their money then I'm afraid thats how our economy works. if you dont lend money the system fails. It would be unethical of me to be part of a breaking system that causes millions to lose their jobs, interest rates to crumble so that noone who saves gets money etc.

Surely it is WRONG and UNETHICAL to "steal" £8.24 from the bank?

The account holder has agreed to certain terms and conditions which they must adhere to - the contract is a two way thing.

Looking at the share price of most of the UK banks I think most of those cats must be a tad thinner than they used to be.

I'm still trying to work out why they are unethical, deceptive and wrong.

They are a bank, there to make money and your 'friend' owed a small amount of money to them and they stood by their T & C's, unfortunatly that is how life is.

Please consider me with contempt, I'm a realist and deal with real life every day, you think the Co-op Bank are bad, spend 5 minutes in my office and see the real world!
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!
