Plasmas do yes, but the later ones are VERY hard to burn, and those that do WILL clear in time (Like mine)

I bought a Samsung 42inch LCD and when I purchased it from Currys the man in the shop told me that LCD's are better as you cannot fix the screens on Plasma's - if they break thats it, you need a new telly.

The only thing he warned me about with the LCD that if you're watching a film dont pause it for too long as the image will burn into the screen. 5-10 mins is ok but I wouldnt do it for any longer than 15 just to be safe.

Also just wanted to say, you'd be better waiting til after christmas as they will be loads cheaper. Thats what I done. Maybe you could get a big box and put a note in it saying 'I.O.U a TV' or whatever and then go out the next day when all the sales start and pick one.

    Good luck xx

Ive never heard of LCD screen burn! You must have that the wrong way round.

  • You get Temporary Image Persistence on LCD's, not screen burn though.

LCD's can actually suffer from burn but as you said, plasmas are more prone (mainly shortlived image retention)

I've heard Plasma has a limited Lifespan as the gas eventually runs out, but LCD is more prone to damage, I guess they both balance each other out in that respect except Plasma wont (in theory) outlast an LCD.

if you get a plasma get a panasonic.

lcd's are in my experience better than plasma, at smaller sizes, but neither handle black very well

How would an LCD be more prone to damage?!

Panasonic's latest range of commercial Plasma panels (and I suspect the same panels is used in their domestic range) claim a half life of 100000 hours, or over 11 years of continuous use.

That used to be true. Not anymore though (they changed the way they worked)

As youve found, theyre NOT good for advice (But then id say NO shop is - they sell you what they want YOU to buy)
Sonys and Pans generally hammer LGs for quality (especially longevity). 720 can easily be better than full 1080 screens. The Pioneer 42" plasma is still regarded as the worlds best 42" and its only 720 (well, 756 ish)
As for items in stock. Richer sounds can pull up on the computer and INSTANTLY tell you if the item in question is in ANY other of its shops, or in their main warehouse. If in the warehouse, they should be able to phone them up and arrange a delivery to YOUR store as soon as possible.

as they charge £60+ for delivery i will only buy from them if i can get it from the shop and as i dont drive i would just order a taxi. if they would get another shop to send it to the local shop so that i could avoid paying for delivery then i would. they did check their warehouse and said there wasnt even any in there. to be fair though it seems currys and their associates dont have any anywhere in the country either. i tried doing a search out of curiosity for a reserve and pick up. i tried various towns in the uk and there wasnt one single store with it in stock.
as far as the 1080 point goes well yeah a top quality 720 will be better than a poor quality 1080 tv. you arent going to get the full 1080 experience with a 720 though and compared to a tv that has a similar quality then 1080 would be better surely. anyway the person at richer sounds was obviously just trying to con me into buying a different tv that just happened to be 720. i already have a 720 tv and the hd picture is only slightly better. so if i am going to upgrade to a another tv then to be worthwhile it needs to have 1080 (among other things) unless it is one of the top of the range tvs then 720 would probably do but i cant afford a top of the range tv.
