so.... another question... have some leftover rice from tonights dinner , I know there are cautions against reheating rice, but if I mixed it cold with some veg and meat for a salad type thing assuming thats fine to eat for a couple of days if I dont heat it up?
also- does anyone know if I can freeze pasata? I have half a carton left and it says to use w.in 3 days - could I freeze it and if I did would I have to heat it up before I do?
oh dear- anyone tell how much I used to live on readymeals!:rotfl:0 -

Hiya, yes you can freeze this, just pour into a tub or bag, whatever you use, make sure you label it, because I guarantee you won't remember what it is, unless you have a photographic memory and not many of us have
When you want to use it, make your meal plan, so lets say you want it for Pasta on Monday, take it our of the freezer at tea time on Sunday, then it will be nicely defrosted for Mondays tea, heat up however you want to.
Simples! it has to be, it to works for me0 -
You can re-heat rice. The problem comes if you keep it standing around warm (room temp) for several hours. If I have warm or hot rice left over at the end of a meal, I put it in a sieve and run cold water through it till it's cold, then put it straight in the fridge. I reheat rice by putting it straight from the fridge into a pan of boiling water and letting it boil for a couple of minutes. Never had any problems. If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0

I've merged this with the reheating rice thread.
As long as you cool it safely and refridgerate it, personally i would keep it two days max in the fridge. Make sure it's piping hot when heating.

I'm baffled by 'rice advice'. I've been married for 38 years and in all that time have reheated rice (usually in microwave once I got one) or have eaten rice salads a couple of days after I made them. Sometimes it would go a nasty pink colour and then I'd chuck it, but I was always quite laid back about it. Then about 2 years ago my DDs started telling me that I shouldn't keep and re-heat rice, and i've now befome a bit paranoid about it. It didn't kill me and OH or my DDs when young, but now it's going to apparently ....:(0

Let's not all panic. You just have to be a bit more cautious than with other foods -that's all
From the food standards agency - this page specificallyI've heard that reheating rice can cause food poisoning. Is this true?
It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem – it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.
Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.
So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.
It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.
Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's steaming hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

hi, i once had food poisoning from eating leftover rice - HOWEVER i had left it lying around outside of fridge for several hours. It wasn't nice and i didn't reheat any rice for months and months. I've since read that it is safe to do so if its cooled quickly, stored on a shallow dish, covered and put in the fridge and its been fine ever since. I found advice on love food hate waste website0
