Mine passed this test which then meant it was a software problem, but as yours has failed, that to me implies it's hardware issue... but the others posting here do seem to sound like they know what they're on about! I just suggested what I was told to do by Dell.

Am suprised that the links lead u to !!!!!!!!! I have tried this on 3 pc's including work and have had no problems. R u scolling all the way 2 the bottom of the link page and clicking on the BLUE download? As 2 legality - google it it IS FREE AND LEGAL!( it will take u to a site called megaupload.com - the site works on a paying premium service or free for limited software dowloads but u have to wait 45secs, and ERD is free) As a mum of 2 teenagers i have had 2 learn 'the techie stuff' the hard way so am only giving info thats worked 4 me.
Again i will repeat if u want me 2 post u the disk i will - yes suprisingly there are decent people who r trying to help the non techies for - wait for it- no financial gain!

erd commander available here for $150. megaupload is FULL of illegal downloads, just because it is possible, doesn't mean it is legal, the rules of this board do not allow the posting of links to 'warez' etc..which the free and full site almost certainly is, just look at the movie section and wonder if Warner Brothers and EMI are really giving brand new films away?!

i am also looking at other advice given thank you all. hope between us we can sort this laptop as i can not afford another one

i downloaded from the link but it came up that it couldnt run because there was an error and then it shut down
also how am i goin to work out why it wont boot from cd. i did change the order in bios to boot from cd but when i try it just goes to a page saying windows did not start successfully and asks if want to start in safe mode last known good configuration or normal. ( none of which it will do )

yes and you can hear the disc spinning but it just comes up to the page windows didnt start successfully.a recent hardware or software change may have caused this.it then goes on to the windows xp pro loading page but just keeps loading and doesnt go on to anything else. when i try to start in safe mode it comes up that imagekernel32.dll is possibly corrupt. the header checksum does not match the computed checksum

i have run the erd commander 50 but a lot of its functions wont work.i am waiting on another cd kindly being sent by someone on here. does anyone know if it is the corrupt imagekernel32.dll that is causing the major problem with this laptop

erd loads i get a blue screen (network configuration ) it says its registering network components it does 1 and 3 but says on 2 that it failed to install network adaptor and to check winbom??
then a box comes up saying select windows installation you wish to repair. i clicked on c:\ windows - microsoft windows xp pro
then when i go start system tools there isnt a system file checker (only system file repair) . and if i click system restore it just goes back to blue screen
