I just checked the BT Broadband site to see what my maximum speed would be and they quoted 4.5Mbs but I currently get 9Mbs on my up to 16Mbs service

Because your ISP is using ADSL2.

There is basic ADSL, ADSL Max & ADSL2 available but not to all.

As suggested by one poster I would move to another supplier but which one will tell me the truth?

Your best option is to find one of the better rated small ISP's with one month contracts, they will do all they can to get your maximum speed, if you are not happy, you can move on.

IDNet, and Newnet are 2 that spring to mind.

Don't get stitched in to annual contracts with the likes of BT and / or AOL.

You can get a fairly good idea what you may get on your line if you look at your modem/router stats. see here The distance from your exchange and even the metal used for your line all affect your broadband speed. How far away is your exchange? see samknows...................

These are the results. How can I find out what they mean?

You are approximately 2.91km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1152 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 14 db 21 db

Maybe you should consider Virgin cable? Be a constant 10 Meg then (Unless you reached the download limits, but even then it would be a constant 2.4 meg)

Your line attenuation figure seems to agree with your 1MB speed for a fixed rate ADSL however your figures could provide a significantly higher speed than this on ADSL max or ADSL2 see here
