Queen, we kept 2 cars, £2750 & £2000.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

These things are judged on a case by case basis. As a rough guide, if a car is worth significantly more than £2,000 - 2,500 then even if the OR agrees you need the car they may require that you replace it with something cheaper. Or that the difference is paid.
If the OR decides that the car is not essential then they will be unable to declare it an 'exempt asset'. That would mean that the OR would have a duty to sell or dispose of the car whatever its value.
This is a bit involved, but if you read the following links then it will give you a good idea of how the OR deals with and decides what to do with cars.

Say the car is worth £2500 and they allowance is £2000 will they give the option of keeping the car if I pay the difference we would need to ask family to help us out0

yes if they said your allowed 2k for a car and yours is worth 2.5k you could pay 500 to the OR to keep it. but like mentioned earlier its down to the individual circumstances and the OR as to the cars being kept or not."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

It might also depend how the running costs are reflected on your IandE too. Theres a thread floating around saying that ORs are on Targets to issue IPAs and BRO, if the cost of running a people carrier compared to a little 1.1ltr car for example is the difference between a IPA and not having one, I would hazard a guess what would be happening.
Theres only one sure fire way to find out and thats wait until your Bc and see what decision the OR comes to.
I'm glad you pointed this out sd.
The OR is interested in the running costs, so if running costs appear high & the car is only worth a few hundreds I could still see this as an asset, although saying that, despite running costs & not working I was still allowed to keep mine after appealing.
Also the car that I sold prior to going BR which could be seen as disposing of assets was to enable me to go BR & have something to live on until new account was set-up.....the OR was 100% fine with this.
Another point is a new car is not necessarily more reliable.
My 5 year old car had sensor this sensor that trouble...you name it it had it.
My 25 year old austin metro which has no sensors & a good old carburetor has not been near a garage accept for fuel.
I will never again pay for a car to plug-in to a computer to find out what is wrong.:cool:BR 08/05/2008

yes but allegedly haddit is also up to there neck with selling HP items and has equity in house, and a buisness thats failing and also shoving 6k into a new buisness. If all this is correct the OR is going to have a field day if they start disposing of assets like they have mentioned. Also haddit isnt selling it to pay BC fees they are trying to get shut of it so they dont loose it in BC which is a totally different situation.
No matter what the situation is, all the OR have are guidelines and each OR is different, no one can give a definitive answer to these questions only share experiences. There was a chance I could have lost our car, but my partner paid for it, I explained that, and it was needed for both of us mobility wise, the OR said he wouldnt have taken it anyway as it was only worth £700, and because I am on sickness benefits I was illegible (is that the correct word) for an IPA so it was irrelevant. I even got an exeption certificate for it which I though was strange as it doesnt technically belong to me although im the registered keeper and only driver."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. Do you think they will take value from parkers guide0
-
They usually do Queen.
Just checked mine on there and tbh its actually cheaper on parkers than I would get in a private sale by approx 30% but it is a 1999 car. Even so that may well work in your favour."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"
