DHL - Do they operate in the same century as we do?

Never had a problem get all my stuff delivered to work
Lucky you! I work for an organisation which has 30 plus buildings on the same city centre site. Our mail service, unsurprisingly, does not take kindly to the 3000+ staff getting their personal items delivered there for them to redeliver to our offices. Our postcode is for the entire site. There is no on street parking near our buildings.
On one occasion I tried to fix up a collection (oh, DHL again, not my choice) from my office. I gave very, very explicit instructions -by email- to the depot, I gave my mobile number so that I could 'talk in' the driver if necessary. None of them were passed on and I ended up getting a right old earful from the driver, in my workplace when he finally got to me.
I've not had a problem with other couriers, particularly the ones who use people delivering locally in their own cars. Most companies will do a Saturday morning delivery. If not, at least they have depots which are actually in the same county as me not thirty odd miles away! Maybe in some places, DHL pitch up at times outside working hours but not where I live. I don't live in the Highlands for goodness sake, I live in a major urban centre of the country on the intersection of several motorways!
Surely the point of online retailing is that it is 24/7? Shouldn't those same online retailers be telling you up front if the delivery service (which you, after all, are paying for) is restricted and that despite paying for that service, the best they can promise is that they'll get the product to 30 miles away for you to pick up (and if you can't get time off work to collect it, your only option is before 11 am on a Saturday morning?)
I have got around it by getting the parcel delivered to my retired parents - but why should I have to?0 -
well you start slating DHL and now you change to the retailers?
its a one size fits all service driven by the costs
why should you have to? well i think online shopping doesnt work for you so perhaps you should stick to the high street
you seem to have ignored the different DHL services mentioned
as for those companies which use owner/drivers delivering in any old vehicle, not for me.
its a backward step and a way of cutting costs regardlesss of the service provided
do you mean most companys will not do a saturday delivery? otherwise i dont get your point

Its most couriers including Royal Mail that need to update and modernise.
Indeed if they offered eveniong deliveries for the same price it would proably save them money in wasted trips and much happier customers.
There are thousands of people capeable of driving a van that would love some evening work (even if it paid the minimum wage).0 -

no it wouldnt save money.these have to be staffed along with the daily deliveries
especially in RM's case
its not just a case of a man with a van going out with random packets
how about we just charge for redeliveries for all those who arrange them and are never in? now that would save wasted trips0 -
yes i agree, it just wouldnt work and costs would increase, the only way it would work if they charge a priemum maybe £6-£10 then people wouldnt use it as its more expensive and start moaning about the cost0

Regarding your recent story about a Royal Mail parcel being put in a wheely bin.
I have suffered recently at the hands of Royal Mail. Many times the postmen do not deliver to the correct door and I end up getting a red card put through a different flat's door when I have waited in all morning for it.

I then arrange a collectiADVERTISEMENT
on from
my local post office online for a particular day only to find that it hasn't been delivered at the post office!
I then ring to complain to Royal Mail customer service who are unhelpful and refuse to give me a direct number for the Seacroft Sorting Office as it is a number they cannot give out! Therefore I have to pay the costs of an 0845 number to eventually get the engaged tone of the sorting office. A quick Google search for Seacroft sorting office and I find a normal phone number which, as you have guessed, is an engaged tone but at least I am not paying to hear it! After the weekend I go back to the post office to collect my package (hoping that it has turned up) only to find that there are now two parcels that have been sent to the post office for me from different senders. The second has not even had an attempted delivery at my house, however I am told I need to pay to collect it or it will be sent back.
Upon ringing the sorting office to complain and trying for six hours to get through, they state the postman saw that I had one awaiting collection and basically could not be bothered trying to deliver this second one!
Frustrating
Its frustrating. Yes I could arrange redelivery to my address for free but I will probably end up at square one again!
Other couriers and delivery companies, perfect every time, always deliver to the right door, and redeliver when they say they will!
Royal Mail sort your acts out, even the post office staff say how useless you are!

now it seems like common sense if someones already going to the post office that they would want all their items there?
direct number to the delivery office? that would be the one on the card
most likely his item wasnt back in time for that day so it was sent out ASAP
if he wanted the item returned to the DO it could have been easily
rang the phone for 6 hours, well if its likel my office we have 1 person dealing with the public at the door and the phone.i wonder how many people from 4 postcodes areas call our office a day let alone call in to collect
note the comment about couriers0 -
I had a delivery from DHL earlier today. Firm took more than a week to actually give the order to DHL but once DHL got it the service has been fine. I didn't pay for it either as my order was expensive enough to qualify for free delivery.
OH said the driver was a bit grumpy but he was fed up with some electronic gadget he'd got to use not at us. So no complaints here for DHL.0 -

They might well offer different levels of service but these are not offered directly to the customer - you just get the level of service the retailer has contracted. Most of the time the customer does not even know which courier will be used until the item actually arrives (or doesn't).
Give me the owner/drivers every time.
I'd also be more than happy to be charged for the times I've arranged a time for delivery and not been in (not that it has ever happened and, of course, one so rarely gets the option to arrange an actual delivery time) if delivery firms were prepared to pay me when me when I've taken a day off work to receive a delivery which has not arrived!0 -

Its easy enough to ask before you buy. The more people that say 'I won't buy it from you because you use X to deliver' the more likely you are to get a response.
If you want a saturday delivery ask the company, if they won't do it then they are not worth buying from, surely?0
