DHL - Do they operate in the same century as we do?

I've ranted about DHL before but it is worth doing again!

I buy a product, I PAY for delivery. If I pay for delivery I expect delivery (within reason) at my convenience. Unfortunately, if I buy online or mail order I have absolutely no say in who delivers my product. If it is DHL my heart sinks and I know it is going to be incredibly hard work!

DHL only deliver from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays. That is when most people are at work. If I were not at work, I probably couldn't afford to buy the product they are delivering. They do not contact you to tell you when they are delivering so that you could, perhaps, arrange to be in. Although, surprisingly, I can't just drop everything and inconvenience my colleagues at a day's notice sit around at home for a day, like piffy on a rock bun.

If you can't be in during their delivery times - probably because you actually, amazingly, have A JOB, they expect you to go to their distribution centre. I don't live in a remote area - I live in a city. However, their only distribution centre in my entire region is in another city 30 miles away.

I find this a quite ridiculous business model. They working on the basis of the 1950s with a housewife at home every day. How many deliveries are taken back to the depot on this basis!

And DON'T get me on to having to phone a premium rate number and listen to a long recorded message before I can reorganise my delivery!

It infuriates me that when ordering online you don't get any indication of which company will deliver. If I knew it was DHL I would, quite simply, not order the product.

Same here, if I know I wont be at home I order using my work address, if I get a card behind the door I rearrange delivery to my work address or my mums as theres always someone at home there.
Their tracking system on the other hand I have fought and lost many battles with at my last employers.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

    No they don't.

DHL attempted a delivery at 7pm on Thursday night, but I wasn't in. He left a card saying he would try again late afternoon on Friday and the parcel came at 5.45pm.
Here I go again on my own....

people want cheap courier services(see the ebay section for proof of this)
so this is done by using large hubs over local delivery offices ala RM
perhaps as you work 9-5 like 'most people' (never had a 9-5 myself) perhaps you should enquire on paying for saturday delivery?

Like some of the others, I arrange delivery to my work address. I'm out from 8 til about 6.30 to 7pm, so no point in arranging anything to come to home address.

If the company do not give me a choice re billing/delivery address, then i don't order with them.

Sorry if I sound smug, but I too learnt the hard way!!

Order via Amazon or any big companies and they do give you a choice for delivery. And alot of smaller companies too. I've just order a very large mirror today (bound to be heavy) and I will have it delivered to work - that way the guys can lift into the boot of my car for me... :D and son can lift it out the other end...

  • Not all shippers will allow a delivery company to deliver to a customer's work address: I have encountered this before, I think ordering my router and microfilters from TalkTalk/Carphone Warehouse was one case (although they may have been referring to if you order a contract mobile through their website).

And that's where the problems can start. It is a bit carp when their depot's in the middle of nowhere, worse when you don't drive, have to use public transport, and land up forking out more than the delivery charge to get to their depot and back...

My phones have come via Carphone Warehouse and they deliver to me at work. As I said previously, if they won't deliver to me at work, then they don't get my custom. If we all voiced that opinion, then companies will have to sort themselves out re delivery options!!

And I have also found that if I really want a product and they can't deliver to my work, then I have googled til I find the same product and a company that can. I know it can be hassle, but it is far less hassle than trying to find the flaming depot! We've all been there - so to speak! :D
