Eon energy tracker..is it accurate?

  • It's going to be some time before we have smart metering, and what I cannot understand is, why energy companies don't provide some interim form of real time monitoring on their websites. This would be very easy to set up and be specific to each consumer, very similar to iMeasure, and give consumers the choice of entering information on meter readings. I've been with eOn for 4 months, and apparently I don't have enough readings within their records for them to give me any data in their Energy Tracker, so for me it's useless.

Well, as I say, this would be so easy to set up and would be the sort of innovation that's patently lacking within the energy industry right now. But, cynical me thinks, the current crop of energy suppliers are not into encouraging consumers to be aware of usage, and seems to be all words and little action.

Perhaps eOn would like to use one of the many spreadsheets that MSE members have produced themselves as a template.
  • Same problem here.

The energy tracker reckons my gas usage is 80% up on last year when it certainly isn't.

I have meter readings submitted at least twice a month and since last October have had my old boiler replaced with a super new efficient model, had cavity wall insulation installed and now obtain most of my hot water and some heating from solar thermal tubes and a woodburner with back boiler.

Just some simple maths using the dates and supplied readings shows my gas usage from October to now is down 31% on the same period last year (and the weather has been much colder recently). How their graph shows it has gone up 80% is anyone's guess and about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

    Hi guys

Just a bit of an update about some changes we've made to our website recently.

We've introduced a real time billing function for customers with online accounts. Now, when meter readings are entered online, customers will be able to see a current balance based on these readings.

They will also have the option of producing a bill, again based on these readings. This can be done up to a maximum of six times per quarter.

This will have an impact on the Energy Tracker, too. The Tracker pulls data from the billing process and uses the meter readings bills are based on.

To increase the accuracy of the Tracker, readings should be entered in line with the billing date and on a monthly basis.

For instance, if a quarterly bill is due on the 15th day of a specific month, readings should be entered 14 days either side of this date. This is what is known as the Billing Window.

Once a particular day has been chosen, readings should be entered on the same day of each subsequent month, whether or not a bill is requested.

Readings entered outside of this framework will result in distortions on the Tracker.

Sorry for the delay in updating those of you interested in the Tracker but these changes have only been signed off in the last few days. Hope they are of interest.

  • Hi Malc,

just tried the real time billing and seems really good. Just waiting for the bill to be produced now.

Are E.ON planning on emailing customers or promoting the new feature on the wesbite to let peoople know about the new functionality? I ask because I normally only enter meter readings when prompted every three months but this would actually make me want to enter meter readings more often- i wouldn't have known about this if you hadn't posted.

    Thanks Malc
  • Hi echoecho

At the moment, I'm not sure what we are planning in respect of promoting this new online facility.

I've just spoken to one of our senior managers about this and asked to be kept in the loop.

Will let you know more when I'm told what the plans are. :)
