Allianz direct are quoting £189, which is pretty competitive, i'm waiting for the abbey bloke to ring me back to check some final details and then it's time to splash the cash. Thanks to everyone for your help so far.

The final instalment in the story - Phoned Justin at Abbey on Friday morning to arrange the insurance, twice the phone rang a few times then cut off, 3rd time it rang until someone else answered who took my details to get him to ring me back, late that afternoon i gave up waiting and rang him back - cut off, cut off, 3rd time someone else answered, took all the details to ring me back.
Monday morning i gave up waiting and rang them again, girl answered put me on hold for 2-3 minutes then cut me off. I rang back another girl answered took all my details, found the quote then told me it had been declined? Said she'd go and check and ring me back.
Tuesday morning i gave up waiting and phoned "More Than" who quoted me £345.77, cover sounds good with all the bells and whistles, so i gave them my business.
If Abbeys customer service is this poor when i'm trying to give them money, i don't fancy the thoughts of trying to get money off them!

I have been watching this thread with some interest since I go through the same rigmarole every year about June (I am presently with Marks & Spencer). Initial quotes tend to be low to get your business and then increase in the subsequent years when they hope (like our banks) that you will find it too much bother to change.

However, you have amazed me with your last post! I have no problems with your decision to go elsewhere since the service you received from Abbey was so obviously appalling, but why More Than.

During your post you had Tesco at £150.00, Allianz Direct at £189 and of course Abbey at £166.00. You chose More Than at £345.00!!!!

They must give you a GOLD PLATED service at that price.

I thought exactly the same but assumed that it was a typo and our little consonant challenged poster actually meant £145

I had insurance with Zurich through a broker last year - this year Abbey was cheaper so i went with them (directly, not with broker). To say their service was rubbish is an understatement. I didn't even receive my policy documents until 5 MONTHS after i bought the insurance, despite ringing them about once a fortnight. I dread to think what they'd be like if i needed to claim for something. Lesson learnt, next year i'll be back with my broker (bartholomew and james)

Yeah I was a bit puzzled by that too

Come on ooo000ooo spill the beans. As you can see from the posts we are all waiting with baited breath for you to explain. Perhaps, in association with More Than> you were money laundering, or did they just take you to the cleaners?

Got my renewal today from M&S.

PS IvanO (sounds like a series on the Beach from away back) I think you got it wrong! There are no vowels I think it is oooZeroZeroZeroooo.

I mislead myself slightly, the cheap quotes were online which didn't give the opportunity to specify that my better half is going to be a childminder (but providing her own public liability insurance), the el cheapo abbey quote was initially taking that into account but was declined. Ringing round with the additional info meant most of the cheap ones wouldn't provide cover and the ones that did all came in around the £350 - 400 mark. Morethan's cover seems more comprehensive than the rest, their bloke on the phone was a delight to deal with (didn't sound like a call centre drone) so they got the business.

Glad you are back again I thought we had chased you away and that we would never have discovered "who dun it" or why.
