That's true Max. The most wealthy person I know works in a normal job and takes on many voluntary roles. He knows he doesn't need to 'earn money' but he says he needs to work to maintain a sense of perspective. Before anyone knocks him taking a job - he also donates to local charities a lot as well. None of this does he flaunt in public, ever.

Not sure if this has been posted but their dentist plan failed earlier in the year too.

"They hoped to open their first clinic in Maidstone, staffed by 150 dentists, but have been deterred by the length of time it would take to get planning permission."

They truly are mad as well as greedy...never mind the planning, you can't battery farm dentists!
  • It will be for people like this who court the "celebrity" of being rich with their big house, expensive cars and race horses.

They define themselves by their supposed wealth, they think it makes them "better" or "more successful" than others (hence the need to go on telly and tell everyone, you don't see genuinely wealthy people doing this).

Going bankrupt probably would be the very worst thig that could happen to them, they'd have to shift their personal perspectives of themselves so far that it would really hurt.

Remember that guy who shot his wife and his daughter before ending his own life because he was about to lose all his "wealth" and status in the community as a big shot? That demonstrates just how massively some people define themselves by their wealth.

In a much smaller way it is also why some (many) people have considered it a good idea to take wealth they have aquired the only way, by their property increasing in value, MEWing it to then buy a brand new expensive car or 4x4. They're actually making themselves much poorer if you think about it (the exact opposite of what they're trying to show to everybody) by having to pay interest and repayments on the MEW and by losing a massive amount on depriciation on the vehicle. Yet it's worth making themselves poorer to look richer. Go figure...
agreed. loss of 'status' is going to hurt as much -if not more- as loss of portfolio.

and -just for good measure- they can look forward to being held up to ridicule by the meejah.

***I can hear it now**** on R4's You and Your's:

'they could do no wong. feted as The Golden Couple of letting they built up a property empire worth hundreds of millions. the good times rolled on and on.

    but, then something happened..........................'

(coldplay's 'when I ruled the world' for background).

    won't be long now.

True Max. I had a Porsche driving customer back last decade. A nice enough bloke but he was showing off his ``wealth``. When his daughter was married it was a flash affair. Then it all went horribly wrong as an overstreched builder. Sadly he murdered his wife and tried to kill himself. He is now doing life. A very sad tale.

I've had a better idea, they could negotiate payment holidays from Fergus for any tenants who are feeling the pinch

As he is, apparently, sitting on such a huge pile of equity and is a professional, reasonable man I'm sure he would oblige

Has there ever been a tenants union?

Fergus: I don't think we've had any house price falls

Presenter: You're contradicted by government data

Fergus: Well the government data is wrong then!

The power of self denial never ceases to amaze...

You need to add that that guy was probably angry with his creditors for pursuing him through the courts - hence his scorched earth policy.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
