We have quite few local services that I have presumed are at least partially funded locally, because they appear so regularly in the local authourites newsletters and self promotion stuff...
ofsted usualy, for education you have to go to college etc to qualify
As I said they will have project workers who work alongside other agencies EG drug awareness but they would not be responsible for rehabilitation. That is why they have news letters to promote services in the area but not necessarily supplied by them.
Just like childcare they will have a list of carers and a specialist at the council but they do not provide or fund the care.
But say a nursery might want to fund something as a 1 off project they may be able to apply for funding or part funding as a 1 off project for the benefit of the local area.
That is why it is local goverment, if you put in health terms you would not get health care out side of your local area if it was only controlled/funded localy.0 -
If you want to know what your LA is funding, try asking them. Under Freedom of Information they have to answer all sorts of financial questions, down to really little things such as how much they spend on biscuits for councillors.
They'll probably have their accounts up on their website if you manage to find the right page for it, and would be able to send you a copy or a link if you contact them. That'd give you the general picture, and then if you wanted specifics you could bug them for more information.
Not everything taken in council tax goes to the LA. They collect it, but that doesn't mean they're the ones who spend it.0 -
News stated that bigger councils like Kent cc, will be able to swallow the loss, but the smaller councils will have to increase charges if they don't get the money refunded.0

Wandsworth.* Name me a council which as built or purchased a house in the last 10 years.(I could show you lots that have sold their housing stock though to HA's)
Councils get penalised for building or making new homes as it's suppose to only be done by HAs. Wandsworth freely admit this in all their literature as they proudly promote their hidden homes scheme.
Oh and the compensation scheme covers personal customers and small businesses iwho are limited companies with less than 50 employers and a turnover of £6.5 million.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I am not pleased to discover that my local council, Barnet, has lost £27 mill in Icesave, so that's 20% of the year's budget gone. I am so cross about the lack of oversight by my councillors that I am thinking of standing, so as to replace one of the fools. The only thing that stops me is that I am not sure that that would reduce the number of fools on the council. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Lets put it this way they may not get it back but they might get a bigger budget or allowed a deficit for a bit.;)0 -
A local council up here in the north west had 2 mil in. As my hubby works there I won't name, names. But in line with the idea of cutting services his IT dept have just been told they are having a restructure (the 5th in 4 yrs). Just an excuse to cut staff really. All jobs are deleted and you are expected to interview for the new (reduced number) jobs, usually same jobs but with more work and tweaked job description. Also have option to apply for volutary severence or early retirement. Either way council end up with a lower monthly wage bill. There is even talk that next year it will all change again as in line with a number of other "backroom" services IT may well become a shared service between 2 local councils or even be totally contracted out.
