I think the review you mention is very well written as that is what I have found.
If you haven't used Linux before and aren't VERY techy then I'd stay away!
I think I'm pretty good with tech stuff and can usually work stuff out from online help etc and my OH is even better but neither of us can get anywhere with installing downloads on my linux webby :(
Unfortunately Microsoft like to be rip off merchants so generally you'll find a webby with XP is £100 more than the same model running Linux:rolleyes:

Thats what i thought. thanks for your help :) theres no point me buying a cheap netbook if i cant use it for everything i want. My brother is quite techie and he told me to stay clear of it. But i was drawn in my the price :o o well, keep searching for it i guess.

Yep - I'd steer well clear of Linux if you aren't a techy. Linux is great if you are a techy but you can't use lots of common software such as iTunes.

Hi i wanted to look for a netbook which lets me download flash player. ive seen a cheap netbook on play but it uses linux and from the reveiws you cant download much applications  is it only linux which this is a problem for?
Basically - if your happy with the included applications, then go for the Linux ones, but that means your limiting yourself to the hardware it comes with, and OpenOffice / Firefox. No downloading Messenger, your favourite email client, setting up your odd bit of hardware (i.e. your symbian ericsson phone) etc.

If you want the option to install whatever you want - then go for Windows.

if you have the skills to use Linux properly (and BASH is your best friend) then good for you.

yes it is more expensive with windows, its coz windows are evil money grabbing wotsits who charge way too much for everything :p
A fully functioning OS is massively complex to create - I paid £60 for Vista, but thats money well spent to what I could be using. Windows isn't the best OS by any means, but I like my OS to let me do what I want - and thats to run application X. Atm, Windows gives me the greatest range of stuff to chose from - Doesn't matter how much better Linux etc is if I have to go and run some other application which I don't find as useful (OpenOffice versus Office 2007 is a prime example, same for Firefox versus Chrome).

All that i have managed to see is bundled packages. and not being funny but running XP or Vista on a small machine like that seriously hinders its capabilities.
Have you ever actually used XP on a netbook? The Atom isn't steller but my NC10 runs suprisingly quickly with XP on - even enough for the odd game.

I had an eee which rocked, SSD's really work well in laptops - but alas it was too small. Got my NC10 for £240 thanks to HUKD a few weeks ago and I really REALLY like it - perfect size, portable, does what I need and has crazy battery life. It's not gonna set the world alight performance wise, but theres only so many applications you can run simultaneously on a 10" screen anyway - it's more than fast enough for emailing, MSN, office work, internet browsing etc.

  • The Acer Aspire One is currently £149.99 on Amazon through Expansys and if you buy from Expansys direct through Paypal offers you can get £5 off.
It is only the white version with Linux operating system which is £149.99.
  • Title says it all I suppose,
I need a small portable netbook to view images taken on a decent size screen rather than the camera lcd. It therefore needs to be reasonably viewable in bright light something most laptops do not do well.
    Any suggestions gratefully received

I use my NC10 all around the place. It has a matte screen and with the brigtness adjusted I have not encountered any problems.

    It has a matte screen
That is the key point to look out for, it's the gloss screens that are dreadful in bright light (though it is getting increasingly difficult IMO to find portables with matte screens)
  • Try this for a well priced machine. Its a very funky looking Lenovo IdeaPad for just £235.75. Its got everything you could want including a built in CAM. I have ordered some bits and bobs off these guys (camera memory and Photo frames) and have always found them really good both in terms of my total experience and price.
  • I found this site top-netbooks.co.uk and ended up buying a Samsung NC10 for £269 plus £7 P&P.

Love the little Samsung netbook. Boots up really quick. Screen and keyboard are comfortable to use and I get nearly 4 hours out of the battery.

I was looking to buy a netbook for under £200 but qute frankly am not impressed with using an external usb or paying £280 for an asus. i sa on pc world they have the advent milano with genuine windows 7 starter for £230 with free delivery or collection. has a 160gb hdd and 1gb ram so i'm looking at that atm as being the prime suspect for my netbook.

Also seen the SAMSUNG NC10 Netbook for £238 at dixons though with xp but a longer battery life.
