In 99% of cases, there is no need for the postage for UK items to ever exceed £8.00. The only exceptions I can think of is if an item was particularly big or very very very heavy and exceeded the courier requirements.

or if the item is very valuable. its often an extra £10 or so for up to £500 insurance

Unless its included in the original postage price all that happens here is that the buyer pays for the seller to get his money back if lost in post. Not worth taking up if you're the buyer.

Not really accurate at all. 2kg 1st class = £8.22 - I don't call that very very heavy.

As for couriers, easily accessible services price's range from £.8.50 (interparcel) - £12.99 (via paypal) - £24.00 (via PO)

Nonsense there are plenty of couriers available that will charge less than £8.00. These are tracked and insured. We post everything over 2kg by courier. Under 2kg recorded would still be covered by that amount.
    Loving the dtd thread. x

yes i do mean the original postage price. i was giving another reason why sellers would need to charge more than £8 postage. everything i send is fully insured, either up to £36 with a certificate of posting, £500 with special delivery, or sufficient insurance by courier for items over 10kg. if there is an extra cost for the additional insurance for a valuable heavy item by courier then i will add the extra £10 or so to the postage charge.

i would be interested to know what courier you use and how much insurance comes as standard with the service?

    Thanks in advance

For larger businesses with volumes in excess of 75/week, yes no problem.

But on ebay is everyone a business seller with that volume?

Sorry for sticking my nose in, but one company I would suggest having a look at if your sending 100+/month is DHL Sale Track. I think rates start at £5.87+vat and can go all the way down to £4.20'ish for 600/month (I think). DHL, no cut-off, set collection time, labels automatically created.

Edit: Again highlights my initial point, good courier rates are available but many don't know about it or even know where to look.

I use a standard courier but i would be daft to say who it is. I only send half a dozen parcels a week.

I take it you use re-seller then? No harm in saying who.

If its DHL sadly you won't be paying under £8 for long.
