  • I am still hunting for the right one, I like the idea of a steam cleaner, but understand that they are not really intended for carpet cleaning? Recently I bought a Karcher steam cleaner at Homebase for £299, not realising that it was not the best piece of equipment for cleaning carpets. It wasn't until I read the instructions and found nothing on cleaning carpets that I realised my mistake. I rang Karcher and they recomended their floor/carpet cleaner priced at only £135!!! They said the Homebase price was about double what it would have cost me to buy on line. I know retailers have to make a profit but I think this is outrageous. I shall be taking it back, so I'm still looking. I would like one that has attatchments for cleaning the stairs and curtains. Any advice please?

I just wanted to add my bit about my new Bissell:

I got a pretty high-end Bissell last week. Ordinarily costs about £249 or so, I got it for £179 at Scottish Hydro Electric - I think they're replacing this model with a new one, so they're just selling off the older version cheap. £179 or so is about hte average price of the smaller model (which is not the lightweight model.) Anyway, I'm REALLY thrilled with it. I had really grotty living room upholstery and it got my armchair and sofa very clean! Then, tonight I shampooed the living room carpet. It's a dark colored carpet, so I can't say I got the most striking results, but they definitely look very clean. And, I can vouch for it drying quickly.

Also, I ran out of the Bissell shampoo (which is about £15 a bottle!) so I used a bit of Stardrops solution. The water came out just as dirty, so I can't complain!

    hi all,
just thinking about getting a carpet cleaner and would appreciate some of your recommendations/experiances.
i'm thinking upright, rotating brush/s to take the strain, effectiveness is more important than price.
    thanks for your help.
Please note, we've had to remove your signature because it was sh*te!

I have one of these - it cost £210 about 18 months ago. That was £40 cheaper than a lot of places - i'm pretty sure they're even cheaper now. My mum, sister and myself paid £70 each and we have shared ownership. It leaves your carpets ever so slightly damp, they don't take all that long to dry completely.
The machine tells you if you're going too fast. I can get 3 bottles of the Bissell cleaner from IdealWorld (tv shopping channel) for £19.99. Argos costs £15 for one bottle! http://uk.bissell.com/Products/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=Bissell&category%5Fname=DeepCleaner&product%5Fid=PROheat+Pro%2DTech+Upright+Deep+Cleaner+with+Exclusive+Scotchgard+Protector

Edited to add: it's now £149.99 from Tesco! http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-1479.aspx
  • Good Housekeeping magazine recommend the Maytag Agility scoring 94/100, which is about £150 at Comet. I am considering buying a cleaner myself because of puppy accidents!

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good value for money carpet cleaner for home use please?

Our carpets aren't terribly dirty - just a little grubby but with a couple of kids dirt from the street or the odd spillage are inevitable.

Don't want the hassle of professional cleaning but would like the flexibility to give them a once over from time to time?

Any one out there with experience or who can advise please?

  • I have a bissell pro heat one, and I think it's great.

However, they can be as much as £300, and well, it'd be cheaper to hire a 'professional one' from B&Q or a hire shop.

    Thanks GW
When I hired from Homebase it was brill. Problem was on carpets/coverings that are glued/adhered to the floor surface (e.g concrete kitchen floor rather than grippers around the edge) the cleaner was so powerful that it actually lifted the carpet and caused ridges. I then had to pay out for it to be stretched/re-glued!
