Hi there. I purchased a VAX V026 Rapid Deluxe from ebay last year. They're graded products and to be honest you can hardly tell the difference. Came boxed and packaged as if new :T I use it twice a year on my cream carpets and I'm very pleased with it.

    vax on ebay

By the way, the upright vax machines on the V026 have rotating brush-bars whereas the cylinder models don't.

not sure what you mean by graded products. should i be looking for something that is graded and also, what benefit or problem are the rotating brush bars? are they good or bad?

i really am a novice at this cleaner lark - wouldnt do it all if i had my way, but with 2 small children the need is becoming ever more essential!!

ok, graded means, ex demo, or machines that have had parts missing or boxes damaged whilst going through the factory. they are restored back to their former glory and packaged up to go out. I purchased mine for £80/90 from a company on ebay. I can send you the link if you wish?

When my Vax arrived at work, I honestly thought I had a new one - it was in excellent condition, all packaged and boxed. You also get a 3 month warranty I believe.

With regards to rotating brush-bars - these are what you have on a regular upright hoover - little spinning brushes - these are move effective in gathering dust and dirt. You will find that on some carpet cleaners they wont have these, just a nozzle to suck out the dirt and water. Hope all this makes sense! Plus the Vax I have has attachments for cleaning upholstery too.

Here is a link to the Vax I have:

  • If money is tight, have you considered hiring one? You can hire the Rug Doctor for about £15 from lots of retailers including Homebase and Focus.

I'v been thinking about one too - labrador and kids in my case!

what about the karcher puzzi ones? a workmate told me they're the best - £350 from ebay, but second hand maybe half that - look nice and commercial - sturdy, reliable is what I need....

But was tempted by the Vax ads on the telly just now.

How dry do the domestic machines leave the acarpet compared to the more commercial ones? Anyone know?

  • has anyone any more ideas before i make my choice. i'm swinging towards the proheat one by bissell, but that is expensive. any last minute suggestions?

the only difference the bissel gives is that it heats the water - so what? You can use hot water in the vax machine and save money.

For Shona - after shampooing they are not sopping wet, I just walk around bare foot cleaning my carpets - have the heating on if it's winter and by the next day they are dry. In the summer, they dry in no time.

We found a steam cleaner worked wonders. Ours is an Earlex, can't remember cost but not very expensive from B&Q, Homebase etc.

I have found that the steam cleaner is good for practically everything else but carpet cleaning although I do use it to loosen stains and spots. I use mine for windows, mirrors, glass, stainless steel splashbacks, shower, bathrrom fittings etc.

I have a polti as demonstrated all the time in John Lewis. For all over carpet cleaning I hire the Rug Doctor from Homebase, Johnsons Cleaners etc Really easy to use. I then just about keep on top of things with my steam cleaner.

In the past ie. more than 7 years ago I've had an upright and a cylinder Vax. Didn't really rate them although things may have improved since.
