Might be worth waiting until November as the big retailers buy in big bulks for the christmas period to give better deals. No doubt you will be able to pick up a 37" for under 500 somewhere. Or if your shopping online try https://www.play.com

Buying such a large tv for under 500 isnt advisable. Id stretch to 6 or 700 if I were you, else youll (more than likely) have a poor tv that will have screen 'glitches' and prone to breaking down!
You get what you pay for.....

  • look out in http://www.richersounds.com , they always have good deals on LCD tv's and their extended guarantees dont cost that much either.
  • Suggest if you can get hold of a costco card, i am pretty much sure you get a 3 year guarantee with all electrical products.

Hope this helps in a different way.

I highly recommend this Panasonic Plasma -

The only LCD I found (quickly mind) which might be ok is this Hitachi ~

I advise AGAINST LG, Philips, Toshiba and Sharp at this price range

  • Thanks guys, I reckon we could probably stretch to £600 £650(max)

Can you get any decent 42" for that?

I like the look of that http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=PANA-TH37PX80

But I always thought Plasma were not as good as LCD's? Is that right?

I would rather have a slightly smaller tv than getting a tv where the picture is not as good.
  • sorry for the constant questions but I am a bit rubbish.

Does this look like a good deal?

also should i be looking at mega pixels & stuff?

This has a a 1080p, 6.2 Mega Pixel resolution screen but I dunno if thats great.

Personally I find Sony to be poor value for money, and will always recommend getting a Panasonic TV.

Plasmas used to have a short lifespan, but I'd imagine this is no longer a problem now. I suspect you'd end up replacing the TV with whatever is better in the future, before the plasma gas is consumed.

1080p is better than 1080i, and it's HD at that resolution. Something a lot people don't think about when buying the biggest TV - is it worth it? Ie: Is it going on a freeview box, a Sky box without a HD subscription? If so, you'll likely find the picture sometimes looks blocky and blurry - which is where HD kicks in, with more bandwidth for the picture, and gives you a better quality picture.

My brother-in-law bought a whopping 40" Sony plasma, and I think he was disheartened when watching the TV about 8ft away and saw artefacts on the picture which was coming from a Virgin Media box without HD.

    Bigger isn't always better. ;)
