MSE_Martin wrote:Thanks for this guys. It's the third one of these. And it is pure legal breach of copyright.
There's a big difference between publishing my info for free (as i do) and allowing others to use it. The intellectual property is about the main thing of value i have, so we persue such theft rigourously.
This one is now being acted on.

I found it on google. I was searching for 'egg money' etc as I have been having problems with the MSE search. It might be a good idea to paste a few of your sentences in and see what comes up!
On another matter if any of us have blogs without advertising and want to repeat money tips with an aknowledgement and an obvious link would that be OK?0 -
Martin says what the situation is in this post, so it seems that neither are ok as they have (presumably) published without his permission.MSE_Martin wrote:Thanks for this guys. It's the third one of these. And it is pure legal breach of copyright.

Sure, but there is a big difference between using Martin's info on a site with advertising against using some tips to advertise this site itself! Anyway, I'm not doing it myself, just thought I would ask the question.0

Copyright would stand whatever the reason people are using the material for though, unless they do it with permission. Enforcing it however on the internet is another matter!lipidicman wrote:Sure, but there is a big difference between using Martin's info on a site with advertising against using some tips to advertise this site itself! Hey, I just know how evangelical people can get about MSE!
However I am in agreement with you, that's why I started this thread after I found the site I mentioned in the OP!0 -
OK, anyhow it was hypothetical. But how is that any different from forwarding the tips email or printing it out giving it to a friend and saying 'check out this site!'?
I think that sort of thing is very different from using it to make a page that uses advertising to generate revenue and not making it clear where the info comes from
And finally to clarify my position: I'll agree with whatever Martin says is OK, sorry if my question confused anyone, I really am not playing devil's advocate intentionally

Smiley_Mum wrote:Is this site ok then, they say that the info appears courtesy of Martin Lewis. Has Martin given his permission or not?

When you write anything. As long as your work is original (your own) you own the copyright to that text. There are exceptions. When we post on this forum, part of the rules state that anything posted on the site is owned by the site (the copyright of any postings on the site is owned by the site). Some sites state this in the terms and by joining, you are accepting their terms. This would be the same if you wrote something for work if it is in your contract that they own your work related articles.
If you want to use someone elses article/essay/words/(even email).....etc. You have to ask permission from the person that wrote the piece in question before you can use this in the public domain.
There are a few exemptions. You can quote an article in reply to a post (as long as you make it clear that it is a quote and provide a link to the original work). This comes under 'fair use'. Fair use is a defence against breach of copyright, but you still have to fullfill certain obligations to be able to use this defence (ie.....it must be relevant and the link must be clear).
Students can also quote someone elses work as part of their coursework or exam. This also comes under an exemption, but, the references to the work must comply with the schools/universities/boards rules for this situation.
It is not only good manners to ask, it is a legal obligation to ask someones permission before you use someone elses work if you want to put it in the public domain. Without that permision you are setting yourself up for a prosecution under copyright laws. People seem to think that it is not too bad, but it is against the law, and is a serious offence. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
