I'm about to leave the UK for a tour of SE Asia in 6 weeks time (Giving up job and doing it while I still can rather than luck) I'll be out of the country for up to 6 months and internet cafe's over there are not secure enough to do my banking in. I know we don't know the full instructions regarding claiming compensation but does anyone know if I will probably be able to appoint a friend or accountant to sort out the necessary form filling?. I have no close relatives that could do it.

Argh - that's a really tricky one. The short answer is you could give power of Attorney to a friend you trust - it doesn't need to be anything too complicated, but it MUST by signed, dated & witnessed by an independent third party as it is a deed.

You can buy forms at stationers (Staples etc) for about £10.

Make sure that you specify EXACTLY what powers you are giving them eg

I Fred Smith grant June Bloggs Power of Attorney to act on my behalf in all matters relating to the recovery of my funds from the failed Icesave bank. June is to act on my behalf with the FSCS and any such party as may be necessary to recover the funds which should then be paid into my bank account Sort Code xxxxxxx Account No xxxxxxxxxx at HSBC.

Without this restriction, you could find your friend also travels the world (first class & at your expense:rolleyes: )

PS - Have fun I loved China (not so keen on Thailand):D

seems B&B are higher than First Direct

they are - the bottom line is that HSBC just don't need the cash so their interest rates are poor. I have business accounts with HSBC but finally had to transfer the bulk of the cash on deposit because I could make almost £10K a year more in interest by going to HBOS (and others)

Unless these internet cafes buy computers an dinternet subscriptions from another planet they'll use the same as we do in public internet cafes.

As long as your pageg is ssl encrypted (all bankings sites etc are) then you're covered.
I hear people saying they're worried about keyloggers etc. Do you really think an internet cafe could afford to lose people's custom if they had that?

Edit: don't forget your card reader if your bank requires it do move money around online. God these things annoy the hell out of me, I had carrying these around.

The 20euro thing is irrelevant now, the Treasury and Chancellor have assured all savers that they will get all of their money back, every penny of it!
  • Noticing things were getting dodgy with Icesave last weekend, I closed my savings account with them, and had the funds transferred to my NatWest current account late on Sunday night. Money hasn't appeared at NatWest and I can't log into Icesave to see if it has "bounced" back. Phoned FSCS this afternoon, concerned I wouldn't be eligible for compensation as I had already closed the account. I'm worried the money will be in "limbo" and the details of my account, provided by Icesave to the FSCS, will show that I had the money transferred before the bank failed. They have reassured me I will be eligible for compensation & they will be sending me a claims form. It's going to be a long wait, as I won't believe it until I see it.

Thanks Dandalan, perhaps we could start a new main thread with overseas & PC banking security. I have been on some travel website forums and the end result is "Do not ever use internet cafes for banking" even Sub laptops and using wi fi is not safe. Also carrying thief fodder such as laptops would be just another thing to worry about loosing or not remembering where I hid it the night before:rolleyes:
I was hoping to come back from my trip with some nice interest paid but now only glad this icesave fiasco did not happen while away.

I spoke to Icesave this morning. I did the same thing as you and closed my account, I asked what the situation was and they said the money has definitely bounced back into my account.

They said at the moment they are working to reactivate all the closed accounts (obviously a lot of people did it when we saw the s*** hitting the fan) and in due course everyone would receive an email supplying them with new login details to get back online.

DO NOT - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use an internet cafe in China to access your bank details. Most are small kiosk type places which also offer cheap international phone calls (and some have other services for men only upstairs!)

Some CERTAINLY use key logging software, and you don't need the hassle. They will go to lengths which we would consider extrordinary. They have a different ethos to us (remember comunists believe all property is theft).

The chinese are hard working, very intelegent & more honest than many in the UK, but they are also very competent in business and not afraid to exploit weakness in others (particularly westerners who pay more for a Starbucks than they earn in a day)
