  • SIGN OF LIFE AT ICESAVE
Having closed my account on Sunday, (no sign of money in my Barclays account) I've been unable to login to Icesave, and presumed my user/account details had been deleted, BUT have just now been able to login and reset password - so my user details seem to have been restored, albeit with no account listed.

Thanks Dandalan, perhaps we could start a new main thread with overseas & PC banking security. I have been on some travel website forums and the end result is "Do not ever use internet cafes for banking" even Sub laptops and using wi fi is not safe. Also carrying thief fodder such as laptops would be just another thing to worry about loosing or not remembering where I hid it the night before:rolleyes:
I was hoping to come back from my trip with some nice interest paid but now only glad this icesave fiasco did not happen while away.

The safest way is to go into your bank and get an "authority to accept instructions by fax" form from your bank. Fill it in before you go, then you can write your instructions and fax them to the bank while you are away.

All hotels have fax facilities (the ones in China with business centres often don't charge for a fax if you don't look like a backpacker), but ALWAYS keep your eyes on the fax and take it with you when you leave (don't put it in the bin where someone could retrieve it)
  • Only just seen this but looks like ICEsave is now FORMALLY in default so the fscs can begin the process of re-imbursing.

I think there is nothing to worry.

The staff of icesave is very humble, kind and cooperative.

I transferend £400 on monday, it was in air for a while but then yesterday, they made a correction and it came back to my account.

I dont think anyone will loose their funds. Its a bad time for us and we will get everything back.... One shud wiat n watch, n keep everyone updated.

Amid all this understandable anxiety for ourselves and the safety of our savings, perhaps we could also spare a thought for the staff of Icesave and Llandsbanki who almost certainly will all be losing their jobs.

I've just watched the news and (not quite sure if I got this right) but are Icesave gping bust??? I advised my parents to put there very hard earned endownment earnings (!) into and ISA. This money is to go towards their pension. What happens if they do go bust? WIll they lose their money??? And all on MY advice!!!

TRIXIE68, I have only just read your OP, I then went on to read comments made by some very unkind people, ( you know who you are.) Little Green men!!!!!!!!!!!

Just want to say I wish I had seen this on the day it was posted. Hope your DMum & Dad are not to worried now.

I've just done some back-of-the-envelope calculations as to how long this might take. It seems there are 300,000 of us with Icesave accounts. The FSA have to send us all claim forms. If you assume it will take 10 minutes for someone at the FSA to open the envelope, log and check all the details from the returned claims and process them (which is pretty good going) it would take 200 people 6.25 weeks working 40 hours a week. In reality I bet you could double this figure when adding time to read dodgy handwriting. Does anyone know how many people work at the FSA?

The easy way would be to take over the ICESAVE website and staff and run it as a stand alone site letting people log in and move their money. For ISAs they could then go through the normal process of a transfer with a new provider. I'm sure it wouldn't be quite as easy as that as its only retail savers that are going to get their money back but not bad of the top of my head!

Doubt they will do it the easy way though so expect 3 months as allowed by EU law

  • I heard that all Icesaves assets in the UK are being froze. Did our deposits actually leave the UK?
I'm not the brightest button with maths but; The Icesave compensation contingency fund is supposed to be 88million. If 300000 people had 16k in the bank that would be 48 million needed only, but I'm probably wrong:mad:

    300000*16000 = 4 800 000 000 = 4800 million, or 4.8 billion
