  • Dont worry about it! :) Thats essentially what the OP is on about, I think - "untested gut feeling".

My oldest is nearly 9 now (wow - I feel old, although I still claim I was a child bride ;) ), and I still have no idea what I am doing. I thought it would be easier with number 3 (there is 6 years between number 2 and number 3 [planned!]), yet I am still muddling my way through! Havent managed any "serious" mistakes so far, but there's alway time - we still have the teenage years to come

Thanks for all the great tips so far,

Last night was bliss fed her at 11pm she stirred at the back of 3am fed her again and she slept till 7ish when we got up. Tonight we bathed her about 6pm feed her at 7pm then put her in the living room for a couple of hours in the pram before taking her up to her basket were she is sleeping now. One thing we were wondering is whens best to introduce water ( going to ask HV tomorrow).

Have noticed today she has been a lot more alert/awake during the day still taking long naps though maybe because of her good sleep last night.

Whats the thinking about swadling (spelling not a strong point) we have tried it a couple of times but the little one didn't seem to like it, likes to move her arms too much me thinks.

Most of the knowledge we have gained so far has came from the Gina Ford book which we could nearly recite now. Although there is a few points in it we don't agree with i.e keeping the baby awake, which has been spoke about in this thread.

By the way whats a DD ???

i found they loved to be wrapped up like a little mummy in their blanket to go to sleep in the first weeks because it makes them feel secure we used to wrap blanket(the type with holes in) round even round the back of head it was very cosy!!the midwives always wrapped them up on day one like that and when they were awake i used to open it and let them have a kick about!! later on theyll soon be kicking the babygym!!that is a good present for christmas!and a playmat elc are brilliant and they wash really well we also had an inflatable ring from there that was great you could lie tham in it and as they grew they sat up and played in it!! brilliant!nice to hear you got some sleep i used to let them sleep like i said before if they sleep let them and sometimes i found they go back to sleep just like us without a feed!!!! if you can hear her sucking her fingers when she wakes you know she wants a feed!! or of course if she is crying the house down!!!

I figured (possibly incorrrectly) that DD and DS can mean dear (or darling, dearest, dreadful) daughter or son. Your imagination/vocabulary is the limit with the initial D - I suppose it depends on the nature of the thread??

I think the Gina Ford book can be useful to give you some ideas but the routines she suggests can be a bit limiting and restricting. (Just my personal opinion!)

All babies are different and you will learn and adapt as baby gets older. Try not to worry. As somebody else mentioned, it's impossible for newborn babies too sleep too much, whether it's the day or night. You're far more likely to have disrupted nights if your baby hasn't had enough sleep during the day and is over-stimulated and over-tired.

Good luck and try to relax and enjoy the first few weeks as a new family. :)

    P.S: DD is Darling Daughter.

when my daughter was born we did all we was told to do and yet she never ever settled.. turns out that she was always on her stomach in the womb all the scans had us see her backside lol so putting her on her back in the cot pram etc meant she didnt like it .. hv told us to try whatever way suited us and her so we put her on her front and hey ho she slept like a log and never moaned... like us adults each child is different and you will find your own way...
Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
    Are thinking of you today.

you asked about giving water, you should be giving it now as baby milk on its own can make baby constipated, just give her cooled boiled water in a bottle, most babys take it better if it is slightly warm, i am a student midwife and a new mum if you want to ask me any other problems concerning baba or OH (other half) i'll help the best i can.

Glad to hear you had a good night with her

  • I've never heard that advice, rather was told to not give water as it can fill the baby up. Thomas is 16 weeks and has never had water ...

It's all just so conflicting, no more so than in the hospital with all the different staff changes.

... some babies love this, others hate it and struggle to get out, and some run hotter than others and could get too hot like this. You're the only ones who know what YOUR baby likes, don't be afraid to try swaddling but also don't think you're doing it all wrong if baby doesn't like it!

Again, some babies might suck their fingers when they want a feed, but others just want to suck ALL THE TIME! And some cry the house down when they are hungry, and others cry the house down even when they're not hungry.

My eldest never sucked his own fingers but would not willingly come off the breast, I swear he would have slept attached all night if I had let him. The next best thing was my finger, or his father's finger (but mine was nicer.) I tried a dummy but he wasn't having that, or a bottle of any kind, even with breast milk in it. My middle son NEVER went to sleep attached to the breast. And my youngest sometimes did and sometimes didn't.

Truly, you're doing fine, try things out and see what works FOR YOU.
