I don't understand the fuss. Swiss Army Knives are quite legal to buy, own and use.
If some scum use it for other purposes - well that's a tad unlucky for someone - but if the country starts going along the lines of kicking off whenever there a sharp bit of metal - we'll all be cutting our steaks with a spoon!
Heavens forbid if somebody goes into a Beefeater and orders steaks - the swines hand over sharp knives there!!

Yes ITA but that is a bit different to attatching one to a fashion coat and and targeting sales at the "yoof" of britain! TKmaxx is a bargain fashion retailer not a camping shop (though they sell a "jumble sale" mix of stuff). You don't have to put weapons in kids hands (or coats!) and if they aren't there they wont be used- yes I know they will buy them somehow- but they have to make a positive choice to buy and carry them rather than just having them given with the coat IYSWIM.

My "issue" is with the manufacturer ever inagining this was a good idea in the first place!!

Swiss army knives are leagal to own and use, but you'd need to be able to prove a legit reason for having it should you come to police attention- your average teen TKmaxx shopper would be pushed to be believed that he wanted to whittle sticks or cut twine whilst camping.....My 83yr oild dad carries and ancient penknife to dead head the roses etc and you'd believe him as it is all green and manky from doing so!
  • Well my point was it's a fashion item sold in a shop. not a ceremonial dagger, not a cultural item.

TK obviously thought it wasn't acceptable and had asked for the knife to be removed by the supplier before shipping to TK stores.

I'm off to watch some football this afternoon and as someone else pointed out, I wouldn't be allowed in the ground with a knife in any shape or form, for good reason. Nor would anyone wearing a coat with a knife hidden inside the jacket would get past the doorman at the towns pubs and clubs.

It's not something I'd want my kids to wear when out on the town with their friends. You may think differently and that's fine. We'll have to agree to disagree.

actually when i am buying "outdoorsy clothes" tk maxx is the first place i look as they have a good range of jackets trousers boots ski wear etc etc. I would think this jacket was in the outdoors section not the young fashion section. Re the manufacturer it is not that outragoeus that a swiss company making a jacket to worn while hill walking, camping etc would !!! a pocket knife with it as a wee extra. I would think it is cheaper for the average teen just to buy a pocket knife for a few quid than £59 for a jacket. This ensuing outrage says more about our society on a few levels than it does about tk maxx.

I think this was way over sensationalised, but the store should have known it's products better just for the fact that they sold a knife to someone under 18.

Didn't help that just days later they were found to have sold (unknowingly) a cane with a concealed sword in it!

The products themselves aren't the problem, the fact the shop didn't realise what it was selling is!

Also if people want to carry knifes they will find/buy them wherever they can. It's a cultural issue that needs addressing, but really has nothing to do with TK MAXX
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

  • A dagger!?! a skian dubh is what its called. And sometimes they are just for show but don't have an actual blade inside them.
