Does anyone know how the SMARTS work and how they record the mail's progress? I've had a couple of queries to resolve connected with the time I've posted items and wondered if the recording of post starts at postboxes.

Living in a very rural area boxes aren't usually emptied at the times stated which seems to be causing the query.

    Anyone know? thanks, Liz

I think SMARTS are scanned in the sorting machine at the sorting office once your postman has delivered it there from the selected post box......

Now, lots of things could happen to make the SMART record a different time or date from your online schedule.......

    * Smart is stuck in post box halfway and postie doesnt know
    * Smart isnt picked up as postie doesnt empty box that day or empties it early (has actually happend to me.......my last posting is 4pm and postie picked up mail at 3.45pm so if I had posted at 3.50pm well within the last posting time it wouldnt be picked up til next day!)
    * Smart is stuck in post bag in sorting office as there is a backlog
    * Smart is dropped in post van
    * Smart is lost in sorting office and put back into system

    Lots of possible explanations........

I've had a fair few queries too about posting times. I tend to post mine in a hospital post box due to my shift pattern, etc and I have noticed that they sometimes dont get picked up till the next day or too early, etc. I just click confirm for the date I posted and leave it at that.

The smarts contain RFID (radio frequency)tags.
There must be RFId recievers at sorting office i assume at various points in the sorting line to see the route letters take to make sure it is the most efficient.

  • SMARTS have small radio transmitters in them (RFIDs). I assume the receivers are located at key points along the route (e.g. main sorting offices) so they can assist in track it through the mail system.

Certainly not in posties vans or post boxes.

Rural boxes that don't get emptied or lazy posties who only bother delivering to your house once a week will hopefully be flagged up by this system and help get it sorted.

I believe SMARTs are only used to track the 'route' the letters take via the Royal Mail to see if its the most efficient/quickest or if they are going by some roundabout route/mail centres to their eventual destination. The equipment to pick up the RFID signals will only be in their sorting/delivery centres..

I believe the 'queries to resolve' are simply created by Kantors system comparing the time/date that panellists report that the test items were posted/received.. - nothing to do with the SMARTs themselves..

Having read all the previous posts on Smarts, your explanation is the closest to what Smarts actually do. Also the explanation as to why Kantar query postings. :D

Put a yellow sticker (with the number you are told to put on it) on the packaging (I usually put it right near the bit where my address is). Then return the item as you normally do, in the big grey envelope.
