Hi all.
I'm looking at getting a new laptop as my existing one is very very old (450 mhz, running on Windows 98!!!) and as a result a lot of websites won't load on it (due to Microsoft's lack of support), very few MP3 players will work with it, and it is generally rubbish.
I'm looking at a Dell 1525. General specs are-
Windows Vista Home Premium
Celeron dual-core 1.87Ghz
2 Gig RAM
160 Gig HD
Intergrated graphics
DVD+/- RW
My question is, is this good enough to browse the web in it's entirety, stream TV, and general hold up for a few years of web use, MP3s, DVD burning and watching films?
I'm not interested in games on a PC, friends who are constantly have to upgrade and I don't want that expense, I'd rather buy a PS3 for gaming.
Cheers folks!!

That will be fine for you want.
Check out Acer and Toshiba though, they can be cheaper than Dell for the same specIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
Depends on the price in all honesty.
Wouldn't get a celeron myself, it's the budget end of the range, better off with a proper core 2 duo.
Acers are pretty good, but Toshiba's are a PITA!0 -
i run an acer with similar spec to what you're looking at alec and tbh i think it rocks.
i didnt give much for it less than £300 earlier this year, i basically use it for web, msn, mp3 players and occasionally watching dvd's (it was a godsend when my tv broke)
if your budget will stretch to a newer processor its worth investigating but i have no regrets about mine whatsoever and would recommend acer to anyone.
btw great username, i've been a pixies fan since about 89 and saw them on the 2005 reunion tour
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester..
all your base are belong to us :eek:0 -
I bought a few Acers a couple of years back and had problems with all of them. I now prefer to buy Dells and one with a similar spec to the above but with a Core 2 processor would come in below £400.
Ebuyer have a good offer on an HP at the moment as well. Check out http://www.ebuyer.com/product/1471730 -
Thank you all. I shall look at the alternatives mentioned!
Graham_Devon - it's not letting me thank you.......! I shall keep trying!
Before Hollywood - excellent! I never managed to catch them on tour. Fingers crossed that they make another comeback before they get past it!If this has been of any use please click on THANKS, it makes me look good.0 -
I've just bought the Inspiron 1525... dont ask me anything technical as I probably wouldn't be able to tell you... still finding my way around it.
has a nifty tool bar on the desk top and a built in web cam that the kids have had great fun with as you can put daft pics on top of yourself and take photos etc..
having to get used to thhe keyboard, sometimes types 2 of a letter when you are typing and skips spaces.. the touch pad is very jumpy at times too.. perhaps I can adjust these, will have to suss it out?
so far, so good anyway

I got a Inspiron 1510 had it about 15 months now its got a AMD dual processor in I find it fine for net, writing, playing card games etc. No good for games but unless you pay about £800 for one. It has 2gb ram and 120gb hd hardly fileld HD up. I took vista off it and put XP I find laptops run better and battery life is better on it0

I've just bought a Dell XPS M1330. Came in at around £800, but I think I've 'future proofed' it a bit for that. I love the lightness and the size - big enough without being too big. I'm really happy with it and would recommend it to anyone, though realise that it may be more than you want to pay.0
