Welcome to the forums, I'm sure that you will get the help that you require. You would have been better starting a completely new thread for your problem. You need to go right back to square one and just set up your router using the Ethernet cable connected to your PC. You don't need any software installed on your PC to do this, just connect up and enter http://192.168.1.1 into your browser. Enter your ISP's user ID and password and try to connect. If this does not work, try using the Troubleshooting option and run the diagnostics tests.

Thanks, have taken your advice and started a new thread.
But in answer to your query, the ethernet port on my PC seems to be broken so i've been using the USB connection instead.
I uninstalled and re-installed my router from the BT cd i had but this did not help the problem.
When i try to connect to any other site apart from 192.168.1.1 it can't find the server but it doesn't give me option of inputting the user name and password on http://192.168.1.1 because it says my router is connected and i can now surf the internet
Also, the BT Broadband Desktop troubleshooting programme doesn't work because it can't access the internet !!!0 -

(Sorry if this is an obvious/stupid question!) I would guess access point?
Try using the ZDWlan tool that came with the adapter, and disable the WZC service.
Please post another ipconfig/all for the laptop and the PC.0 -

On the laptop, under wireless network connection, when I try to connect it says 'Limited or no connectivity' - when I click on that it says:
Connection status: You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.
If I click on details, it says:
gives a physical address: 00-14-etc
IP address: 169.254.206.79
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server: (last 3 are all blank)
If I click on repair it says:
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your ip address.
----
I have set the ZD1211 Wireless LAN configuation tool on the PC to Mode: Access Point. It offers various options: a Station MAC address box which is curreently blank but did have some numbers in it earlier.
It says current network setting:
Channel: 12
SSID: (my network name is here)
WEP: Enable 64 bit
TX Power: Level 0
There are options to edit this (more setting button) - tried changing the channel but made no difference. Other options are:
Wireless mode 802.11b+g Mixed Mode (it is set to this)
802.11g only
802.11b only
Channels: 1 to 13
SSID (my network name is here)
hide SSID option box (currently unchecked)
Tx Power: Level 0 (Maximum) (current setting)
other options 1 to 3 - 3 is minimum
Authentication: Shared Key
Other option: Open System
WEP: enable
other option: Disable
Setting button.
Fragment Slider: set to disable
RTS/CTS slider - set to disable.
Preamble: Long
other option: short
MAC address filter with Setting button - clicking on this it says Filter type : Disable
Bridge Adapter: No bridge.
Finally (!) back on the main screen at the bottom it says:
TX Frame: 443 (varies) RX Frame: 0
Apologies for such a long post - I am now going to have another read of the user manual on the cd-rom that came with the usb adapter to see if I can figure out more about what all the above settings mean and which (if any) require changing!
Thanks again."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

I can only suggest going through the Barb Bowman guide carefully again ---> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_02april08.mspx?pf=trueHi
Try setting a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on the wireless adapter on the PC. Do a Repair of the wireless card on the laptop and it should pick up an IP address of 192.168.0.x, where x is 2 or 3 etc.
Make sure all wireless security on the ZD1211 wireless tool is disabled, SSID is broadcast (not hidden) and firewalls disabled.0 -
