We were taught to make cheese on toast, scrambled egg, fairy cakes, that sort of thing, at school- ok for a a start but not exactly inspiring  !
Mum did use ready made meals some times (as many did in the 70's and 80's esp 'boil in the bag') however she did cook stews, soups, pies, baking etc and I loved watching and helping (peeling veg, making soup etc) her. When I first lived on my own I kind of did the same, half and half, but as time went on I did learn to cook more (did throw away a lot of leftovers though) and now I am married with DS (and at home more) I cook most dinners from scratch, bake cakes, bread etc. DS often watches me in the kitchen too.
I love cooking food from scratch- it must be hard if you don't have a natural interest or ability and it can seem daunting. I think Jamie is trying to do a good thing, whether all his techniques work well time will tell. And as for his pupils, well lets not throw stones unless we are perfect in every way ourselves!
(Of course I am sad at some of the things I see but then there is a huge diverse range of people out there and one not better than the other).
And regarding age, I am 33, but have cooked for a long time (as explained above).

Other DD (14) made the lemon and garlic chicken from JO book last night, all my herself, I was really impressed, she had to blitz cream crackers and garlic and lemon zest and coat the chicken breasts in it and she baked it in the oven. She hasn't cooked that much, only had home economics at school, but she just said: mum, I get nervous when you just stand there, if I need help I will call on you, and she just did it, only asked for my help once.
Filled her with confidence to try something again.0 -
so I suspect we wont see the julie critchley fan club starting up here anytime soon then
I dont really understand why she's on the show at all although I can understand he felt he needed to face her down at the start; on the first or second program she threatened that she would walk away, like the whole of the series depended on her! and she's not exactly qualified as a healthy eating guru is she
I feel embarassed for her actually because she's making herself look so stupid.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I don't know about all secondary schools but we are, at the moment, looking round to find DS a school for next year. Both the schools we have looked at have had excellent cookery classes. They had demonstrations while we were there and they were cooking proper family type meals and I spoke to some of the boys there and they said they really enjoyed it and they learnt budgetting and shopping for seasonal fruit/veg etc. Sounds good to me. Not sure if this is all across the country or just in this area and, again, not sure if this has always been the case or if it has improved just recently.:)Do more of what makes you happy:)0

by checking out the discount board you very rarely have to pay delivery charge, in fact depending how much you spend you can get more off0 -
Natash might not have a PC though. When we were little, I lived in a village that had a Co-op (very old fashioned one where you got served) and the rest of our shopping was done from Mobile shop vans. I know this isnt very environmentally friendly these days, but the best one was the Greengrocer - he came round with a horse and cart twice a week - now theres an idea for Tesco etc!!! My grandad used to walk arounfd the village when he had gone, scooping up all the horse poop for his garden.0

or a credit/debit card.
That is unlikely in view of the fact most benefits are paid in to a bank account.. she wouldn't be able to access the benefit money if she didn't have a card and tesco even take the basic electron card now.
We grew up on benefits too because my dad was too lazy to work.. the bills were always paid, they never had credit cards or bank loans and smoked at least 20 a-day.. each.. but we never ever had a takeaway.. it would have cost a fortune!!! They did once we were all in bed but not very often.
I left home unable to cook, I think half the country does! and learned because it is a life skill start off basic and work your way up there is no excuse for being 'unable' to cook.. there are so many basic cookery books out there.. even if you buy one aimed at children and start there.. if you can read you can cook! If I needed to learn fix a car or whatever I would.. I can wallpaper and lay carpet and change fuses and lay bricks.. but only because the need rose for me to learn.. similarly with cooking..
I regularly dump the 2 oldest girls in the kitchen with a recipe and say 'get on with it'.. and they haven't poisoned anyone... yet... if they can do it at 11 and 14 anyone can.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
