Hi.I started using the couch to 5 k podcast about 18m ago and it took me from not being able to run for 60 seconds to being able to do that 5k - it did take me longer than 9 weeks, more like 15,if I can remember.lol .I lost a dress size and have still managed to keep it of .

Anyway have let things slip a bit of late,so I'm starting again, managed to do week 4 yesterday (omg it hurt).

Good luck, and remember if you really struggle just repeat a week, until you find it easy !!!! ( think I got stuck on week 3 for ages)

Seconding what nottslass said. It took me a lot longer than 9 weeks. I found the jump from running for 3/4 minutes to 8 minutes too much of a jump all at once. Soooooo I made up my own playlist for a while using songs from my iTunes library. For example a 3m30sec song followed by a 60 sec song (difficult to find but there are some) followed by a 4m song then 60 secs etc making the time up to 30 mins.

Don't get downhearted if things turn a bit difficult. You'll find your own solutions. :j

  • Oh my god! Im a combination of all of the above posts! I decided back in May i was going to start to run/Jog.

I wanted a hobby, something to stop me sitting around & get out of the house, also want to loose a dress size as im turning into a slob! I got the gear( My OH is really sporty, he bought me base layers to run when its cold, arm band thing for my ipod etc..) kept it up for about a week!

I did a 5k run in Aug through work for charity! It was hard! didnt realise how out of shape i was!! Im only about 10 1/2 stone but thats biggish for me!

I have got some fitness & diet mags i bought that have loads of tips, Ill start to look through them again & post any hints/ tips we could use for the runs/preperation..

    Ill download the podcasts now..

Im def in tho! I have jeans i want to fit into & be able to walk & talk!! ha ha!!

Put my name down pleas Drea.
Ill start to look thro the mags..i was going to follow a schedule they had to get you to run for 30 mins without stopping, all breathing techniques etc...once you have them mastered it meant to be a lot easir!

Gah - nonsense!:p :D Take it easy though - if you're just a bit stiff and tired then a slow run will do you some good. If your knee joints hurt/ache give it rest for a day or so. And remember to stretch a bit after you've run - it helps with aching muscles. I didn't rest enough when I first started and really hurt my knees (felt someone pounding my knee caps with a hammer if I tried to run - not a good feeling).

And run slower than you feel you should. It's not about speed, more about endurance. You are trying to get your body used to a different level of exercise and build up your heart and lungs.

It was only in May when I did the first podcast and yesterday I ran for 3 miles non stop (mile and a half down hill - yay :j- and mile and a half back up hill - nooooo :( ) If anyone had told me 6 months ago that I could run for more than 100m without lying down afterwards I'd have told them they were daft - and also blind :o

You CAN do it. Half the battle is actually getting off the couch and into the [strike] rain and wind  [/strike] lovely fresh air :D.

    Go Team MSE! :T :j :T :j :T

Drea - put me down as one of your recruits please.

I'm going to start tomorrow - think I'll start with week 3 as I've been doing some running in the gym, but need a program to work up to a continous 30 mins of running.

Penny Watcher - totally agree with you about not running too fast. I use a heart rate monitor to keep me in the fat burning zone and make sure I'm not going too fast as otherwise I can't keep going for 30 mins of walk/run.

    Good luck everybody!
