Totally agree with you. I showed my heart rate according to the treadmill to OH one time and he said if that was correct I'd be dead :rotfl:

Right, I just need to choose something reasonable. Not like I have just seen Polar FP80, which looks amazing and costs nearly £300!!!!! Even Garmin Forerunner 305 at ~£150, that you could download training programs from Garmin website onto it (which would be great, as having a goal keeps me going - I am dreading what will happen when I reach the 5km, I'll probably revert to sitting on the sofa all evening again...). It also looks absolutely huge!

I've a garmin 205 and love it. It doesn't have the HR monitor in, but just the GPS is worth the money. So good to be able to see what pace you're running at (makes regulating pace very easy) - it gets me home when I get lost *and* it saves me hours mapping out runs/bike rides after the event - as it knows where I've been.

If you're into running for the long-haul, it's definitely money well spent - but it's a lot to shell out if you end up losing interest in a couple of months...

And it is big, not so bad for a big guy like me, but on petite women it can be a little *too* big - but they do more expensive ones now that look a lot better...

I am worried that I might lose the interest. I think I might give one of these GPS units once I reach the end of my 9 weeks (and manage to run for the full 30min)...

About the size of it. I am a woman, but not that petite! (ok, I am 1.64m, but weigh 85kg and need to lose weight is one of the reasons that keeps me going!)

ginvzt I have the polarft60. I think I paid about £120 which is a lot of money but I really needed something to motivate me. It has a personal programme which it alters and awards you a trophy if you hit your targets. (I cannot believe that as a grown woman this is motivating me:eek:)
Anyway the con bit is if you want to link it to your computer you have to buy a flow link(approx £40?) and then a footpod for distance or a GPS. What i considered was that I could buy these extras, as and when. I bought the bits off of amazon which I get vouchers for doing surveys from thanks to MSE:)
I then bought my footpod second hand off of e-bay by someone who had started running but given up. I too need to loose weight and this thread and the polar monitor together keep me going.

I may 'have' to have a look at these things in the shop tonight when I get my shoes.... Shouldn't really be spending all this money, should I?

Just a word of warning, in stark contrast to my advice on shoes - I'd probably not ever buy a GPS/HRM from a running shop - the mark up on them is dizzying...so much cheaper to buy online. Of course, if they have them cheaper than you can find them elsewhere, go for it - but this is a long way from my experience.

No, I know to buy these things online and to remember using cashback sites! My OH jokes, that I wouldn't buy anything if I wasn't getting something back (points, miles, finding vouchers for discounts, cashback!)

But what I might do (if I am brave enough and they are friendly at the shop), ask what they think would suit me, and what should I look out when I buy one.

    Hello!

I've been doing this training and had no idea this thread was here, glad there are so many people like me doing this!

I'm on Week 3 at the moment and finding it okay, I'm training for a Race for Life run in June and started training early as I didnt want to embarrass myself on the day!

I dont use the podcasts though, as I run on my own through some woods and didnt think that would be sensible, so I use the interval timer on my mobile to tell me when to run or walk and that way I have my phone with me should anything happen.

I am not a natural runner (I really dont like running!!) but it is starting to get easier!
