Hi all, I managed run 2 of week 3 yesterday and guess what?!?! No shin splints... the only change i did was to tighten my laces on my trainers as they were on loose (and have always been). Must be my feet moving around in my shoe and not enough support for them. I have got my last run of week 3 today, I'm hoping it will be a success like last night... and without the shinsplints!!
I have ordered some sorbothane insoles anyway and will be putting them into my runners once i get them... they can only help more!
Good luck with your runs peeps!
Gops
Glad your splinshints vanished. :T0 -
Hello everyone. I hope you don't mind but I have been reading some of your stories and find them quite inspiring. You sound like my kind of runners too...starting from nothing and even finding the first steps hard. I've been kidding myself for ages that I'm fit enough but I know I'm not and have decided I must do something. I am at least a stone and a half over weight. I have two teenage children to look after, elderly parents who need looking after , a job, two small elderly dogs and goodness knows what else. I have no idea where I am going to find the time to run let alone the kick up the backside to get off the sofa. However having read this thread I downloaded the couch to 5K podcast and did run one today!:)
Now I ache all over, but just thought I would check in.Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0 -
Well done teachergirl :T:T:T, that's all you can do is one run at a time and it's only 20 mins for the first good while which hopefully you'll be able to do.0

Hi teachergirl
well done for doing the first run - if you spared 25 minutes to do that, you'll be able to do the whole lot, no problems.
I have to confess to having had another terrible session. I did my usual 10 minute bike warm up and streches but when I started on the treadmill I started to get an upset stomach. I managed the first 5 minute walk and then 5 minutes run, and did another 5 minutes walking trying not to fall over, but when I started on the second run I had to give up. I was worried I was going to clear out the whole gym!
I was feeling really positive about starting week 5 but I feel a bit low now. I need to give myself a good shake and get back into some healthy eating and sleep habits. My diet has been shocking this week and I've been drinking loads of energy drinks which I know only end up making me more tired. Weekend away tomorrow but I promise when I get back I am straight back on the wagon!
Hope you are all doing a bit better than me!

Welcome to the new people
I've been going quite slowly as I repeated the end of week 3 a couple of times, now nearly finished week 4 thoughWeek 5 looks terrifying though  Keep going everyone!!

My first run is today! I am nervous/excited! I downloaded the podcasts last night, but think i'll just use a stopwatch and listen to my own songs while i'm running.
Whats better to run on pavement or grass? I want to take my dog with me and if we're on the grass route i can let him off the lead, the pavement route is next to a busy road so can't that way.Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

Pavement and grass both have problems. Pavements are hard, and you'll be breathing in car fumes while you run. But unless it's a well kept field you might find the surface is uneven and fall over - or you'll tred in dog poo!
Choose whichever is flatter (hills are bad) and where people are less likely to see you. Or since you need a 5 minute warm up walk, which area is 5 mins walk away?Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

The field is five minutes away and farily flat and even ground, it's a dirt track rather than grass, thats five minutes walk away - which was what made me consider it in the firsst place, the main road is directly on my door step and a pretty busy road too!Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

Field probably beats busy road, then
Or you could try one today and the other next time and see which you preferMurphy's No More Pies Club #209

Just did week 5 run 1 of my couch to 5k programme along Regents canal :T:T which was lovely today, really sunny and pleasant.
In fact in the end I did a bit more because I'm so worried about the end of week 20min run I needed to build up to persuade myself I can do it. Managed to run 2x5 mins and end on a 9.5 mins - would have done the full 10 but I reached a very steep little hill by one of the locks and knew there was no way I was running up it
I'm pretty happy with this although my legs do feel like lead.
So all of you looking from week 4 to week 5, it is doable, I am living proof. And I'm also a couple of stone overweight so if I can do it so can you!
Oh and treeny bash apparently upset tummy can be common with running, just saw this in a running book lately...so don't feel too bad about it. Though you will def feel better if you sort out your diet...0
