On 6th September, we left our car at an airport parking place and happily flew off. On our return the following day, we were given the keys to our car, got back to it and found the gearbox was broken. No one had pulled us aside to explain. So we go and complain to be told 'it was like that when we got in it to move it'
I said if that's the case can you explain to me how I saw your guy drive it past me whilst I was having a cigarette and suggested they check the camera which was pointed directly at me at the time. They then changed their story.
I hope you have some luck in sorting this out. Just one thing ... from a legal perspective (because lawyers are nitpickers and insurance companies have people who carry out the same kind of investigations!), if you were just about to jet off on your holiday, all excited and having a quick ciggie before you went into the airport why would it enter your head to see if the car park camera was pointing directly at you? It's a bit of a strange thing to say....
But good luck with it - I hope they accept liability for the damage.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

Well, if nothing else, perhaps your experience will make other people think twice about using 'park & leave keys' parking services. We did this once, at an airport not too far from where you returned to, ironically. As we left for our holiday, I saw them drive a car back to the main carpark for pick-up with two flat tyres. Not sure whether they actually left it in a field of crushed glass, but I worried about it so much on holiday that since then I've always paid a bit more for 'park it yourself and take the keys with you no beggar's driving MY car' parking.Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Well I have read this thread and heres my unbiased response.
It appears there is a problem with Polo gearboxes which can cause this kind of problem, the fact is this has happened while the car is in there care, they should have had a record of this and explained when the OP returned to collect the car. You cant however blame someone for this as it is wear and tear, if the car had been abused at any time there would be other signs. You mention the clutch smells, however as with any company an employee wouldnt want to be blamed for causing such a problem so would have probably tried all he could to move your car before informing his boss, yes this can cause more damage to your car but probably nothing more serious than the original cause.
As for the reset clock etc. I am guessing when parking cars in these car park they disconnect the battery, this would prevent your clock etc that use a permanant feed from draining your battery on your return, some people go away for months or weeks.
If your insurance company are looking into it for you then good luck but personally I would just let it lie.

Some years ago we had to get a reconditioned gear box fitted to our Polo. Three years later it failed, totally suddenly when our son drove it - only gear he could get was third. We had to scrap it as not worth repair for a second time.
