Yes, yes they do. BUT .........

Tell me then oh wise a$$hole - why did they need to lie 3 times and avoid contact with us and not even fill in a report or anything eh??

Old cars break, perhaps they don't do reports?

And why do I need to repeat myself over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over to make you listen to the relevant bits rather than you speculating (are you getting it yet?)

Were you like this with the car parking people?

Perhaps there's a reason why contact has been a bit patchy?

Nope, not the gearbox internals (as all the other problems on that site were) it's a problem with the gearbox casing - if you don't know the difference, please don't give your (very clearly) uneducated, unwelcome, unrequested, GUESSES.

"box has broken 3 times which meant I was unable to use the clutch - apparently this is a "known" fault on Polo's - the GTIs were recalled for this - however the other Polo's were not. After having it welded up multiple times I eventually had to have the whole box replaced - this cost £400 "

Good point. They put a cardboard tag on the keys tho and once we got back to the car and realised it wouldn't start, we noticed someone had written on the back of the tag 'no gears' so they knew.

"It finally packed up completely just after I got home, with the gearbox completely jammed, so that the car would not move forward or back, even with the clutch fully depressed. I then got it towed to a garage.

The verdict: the gearbox had somehow drained itself of oil, and then ground itself slowly to bits, so that by the end, it was trying to engage in two gears simultaneously. The casing is also damaged, so a recon. is out of the question, and given the combined costs of repair, labour etc., the car is probably a write off."

    Interesting thread...

Sorry OP, but I think that it is shame really for you and the parking guys - the gearbox packed up at that time and not really alot to say... :o

It happens unfortunately. Even worse when it happens when someone else is driving it. Imagine how they feel!

If you think they 'broke' it - lord, what on earth could they have been doing to cause that amount of damage? Sorry for you, but think that the gear box had come to the end of its life at an inopportune moment for you. (and them)

We didn't reset the trip as we thought that was a bit obvious but we did mark the mileage down and when we got back the car had travelled around 30 miles.

I had the same sort of experience about 8 years ago. I had pre-booked parking at Luton. It was with a company where you left the keys with them and they parked the car for you. When we got back from our trip I noticed that the mileage had gone up by about 60 miles.

They refused to accept any responsibility for this and since then I will only park either in a long stay or short stay car park myself so that they do not require the keys to the car.

So why all the lying by the parking company?

Cars break, particularly older ones, and a parking company will have a procedure in place for this. Usually filling in a document signed by the person parking the car when the incident occured. They also should have insurance incase of incidents whilst car is in their care.

If the gear box broke whilst parking it due to old age of the car, then why all the fuss and lying by the parking company? It would just simply be a case of speaking to the owners when they returned, and explaining how the gear box seized up when parking it, hand them a copy of the form filled out, and offer them assistance in getting the car picked up.

In fact, if they'd done the above, there would be no need to be venting in the first place!!

The lying and reset milage indicates that someone underhand went on.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Did they? we have one side of the story

Agreed, They do but how do we know the car broke on the site and not down the road?

Again we only have the OPs side of things, For all we know the car park company might have been the best first response ever.

Again agreed as I said above but if it didn't break on the site and in the OPs care should the car park operator be responsible?

Again we have one side of the story, so I would refuse to comment on this personally

On OPs side aswell, again in situations like this only the OP and the company know what happend.

It just smells fishy the insurance company has got involved, mechanical failure they usually don't touch with a barge pole, unless you claim the car was TWOC'd

You really have gone too far.

WHY on earth would I come on here asking for advice on a fictional situation? Where would that get me !!!!!!? I'm a regular poster on this forum (on the old style and weddings boards) and I have NEVER come across such !!!!!iness and backstabbing as on this board. You should be ashamed! Can you prove to me it was mechanical faliure??? No and so far neither have the car parking company!

The car was broken ON SITE when we got there. Actually, I have a copy of the report that the superviser wrote once we insisted (after we'd called breakdown) I might scan it in and post it just to shut you up with your bloody accusations once and for all. You don't know me - how dare you cast aspertions on my character. Don't judge others by your own standards - troll!

It's the "jammed in third" that would make me wonder. It's not often you get into 3rd gear in a car park. Even if it's a big car park, there are always so many people wandering around that it's not safe to drive very fast.
