Bit of a moan

Hello,

Im new to this benefit stuff so I just wanted to find out what/if I'm entitled to anything.

Me and my partner earn a joint income of £25k and he is in debt £6k, therefore he has alot of money going out and we live on little money each month.

We dont have any children. This is not meant to sound nasty or anything but I know people on benefits and they have nice flats and seem to have everything they want. It just seems to me like, if you have a child you get everything. Like before thats not a dig its how I see it.

I doubt if you would be entitled to anything but you could try putting your details into the online benefits calculator entitledto.com. I take your point about people receiving more benefits when they have children.

There are other parts of MSE where you can have a moan, this is not the place, here we help people who need advice on benefits.

I have to say that you are not alone having debt, the whole country is upto its ears in the stuff, but before you comment on how well you think people on benefits are doing I suggest you equip yourself with the facts, not what you probably read in the daily mail.
As for having children trust me no one does it for the money if they have any sense:rolleyes:

  • You may find the other boards are better suited to stretching your income, like the old style board or the debt free?
I think this is the bit that gets up noses 'and they have nice flats and seem to have everything they want' - what about those in ill health?? Before the year is over I think many many more people will also end up losing their jobs through recession and economic factors. Lets hope you are not one of them....

I have not seen in your op any where you have asked for advice, it seemed more of a rant and as Woodbine correctly says this is not the place.
I know plenty of parents that are claiming benefits who are not in debt and budget really well. If you have debts that is making it hard for you to budget then you should send a budget sheet to your creditors asking them to reduce your monthly payments, but without having the full facts we can not offer you any proper advice.

having children puts a strain on finances and thats why a lot of famalies are in debt but you dont have that excuse your debt is down to excessive spending !

  • I would be overjoyed if we had an income of £25k and debt of £6k. But we are nowhere near that income and more in debt and we have 2 children.

This was in my original post - I was clearly asking if I was entitled to anything - therefore asking for advice. And I do understand that people cannot work due to illness - thats why I didnt mention anything about them.

So my original question was what could a couple with no children receive in benefits - I take it theres nothing that could be offered to us?

  • This is the only one I can think of (of course one of you could always do a couple of extra hours)....I get the impression though that you would not choose that option, anyway .....

Working Tax Credit is for people who are employed or self-employed (either on their own or in a partnership), who
    • usually work 16 hours or more a week
    • are paid for that work, and
    • expect to work for at least 4 weeks
    and who are
    • aged 16 or over and responsible for at least one child, or
    • aged 16 or over and disabled, or
    • aged 25 or over and usually work at least 30 hours a week

You having my backing entirely Stacie.

Problem with some boards on MSE is that they are more or less a 'closed shop'. What I mean by that is you can only say what the regulars find acceptable - step out of line and, as you have seen, you get silly people telling you to go away.

I am similar to you in circumstances Stacie.

Just ignore the nasty posts - there are people who agree 100% with your view but don't post on here.
