Average Speed Cameras?

Do people not know what average speed cameras are?

I've been up and down the M74/M6 construction, where there is a 50MPH limit.

In the 2 times I passed through last week, there were drivers hammering through and slamming their brakes on for the cameras, then raced off again. The rest of us were just happy at 50MPH!

I reckon that's about 6 speeding tickets I saw issued in just those 2 journeys.

Suppose they'll learn what the word "average" means now!

  • they have these on the m27, there is speculation as to whether or not they are turned on, but thats not the point as you still get all the clowns slowing down to 30 - 40 to go through them causing a massive wave effect, then they speed off into the distance!

Sometimes i just think its becasue they have forgotten about them then panic when they are reminded when they spot them

These are what are known as SPECS cameras. they measure the average speed of a vehicle between the camera positions. There will be a camera at the begining and end of the section being monitored. In addition if the section is long enough there will also be intermediate cameras as well.

The cameras read your number plate digitally. It is then read again when you pass any intermediate and/or the final camera in the section. This will then be used by the computer to work out your average speed. If it exceeds the designated speed for the section it will automatically generate a NIP (notice) to the Registered Keeper of the Vehicle requesting the details of the driver. Thedriver can then expect a fine and the normal points on their Licence!!

So, unlike GATSOS, TRUVELOS etc, slowing down at the camera will have no effect. It is the average speed that is important. These cameras are usually mounted over the carriageway on bright yellow or blue gantry typearrangements and the cameras look like CCTV cameras and are painted yellow. there is normally one camera per lane. Also since April of this year changing lane will have no impact upon being caught. Prior to this idate f you changed lane it was possible to challange the accuracy of the data used, but this applies no longer as the system is now licenced and approved to cover all lanes on a section.

    is 50 unless stated

    also its the average

meanign you an go in one lane doing 60 then go in another lane doing 40
    your average is then 50..

i have seen cars join frm a slip road and go past doing 70, but as there was only one camera , the average cannot be taken therefore h has yet to get a fine..

Not true, actually. If you do 1 mile at 60 mph, that will take 1 minute. The next mile at 40 mph takes 1 min 30 secs. So that's a total of 2mins 30 secs for 2 miles, which works out to an average speed of (60/2.5 x 2) = 48 mph.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

No SPECS tickets for bikes as we don't have front numberplates :)

Watch out on the M5 Avon Bridge in Bristol as there are a number of these nasty cameras there right now.

SPECS only work if the numberplate on your vehicle is genuine.

Yeah, whenever I go through SPECS I always think it is easy to spot the people who haven't registered their car!

Do what Jeremy Clarkson suggests - drive at 152mph till just before the 2nd camera, then stop until your average is under the limit, then start again

I did read that these cameras are "laned". If you pass under the camera on the inside lane your speed is only calculated if you pass under the next camera also in the inside lane.
