Thanks Latecomer. How long has it been down so far? We don't wear shoes inside either......... maybe grey for floor and ivory for wall is the sensible choice!?

Probably about 5 months now I guess. We've got light coloured tiles so my concern was that grey grout would look odd, particularly as we used the same tiles (albeit a different size) on the wall and had used ivory grout for them.

Yeah I would personally get the biggest you could go for. We had to go for the smaller one due to the lack of space in the room. In terms of hanging towels on it, we just drape it over the top (bath towel) and you could put a couple of hand towels on the rungs below.

One thing to think about about is that if you cover your towel rail with towels, you block a lot of the heat output to the room. I think ours is 1800x500 and you can tell the difference when its covered with towels. Of course if its on a lot then you may no notice the difference but if its only a couple of hours then it will be very noticable if your bathroom is quite big.

Exactly the same, light tiles and same for floor and walls. Do you have any pics available of yours LC?

We will be using it as a source of heating along with the underfloor heating matting. it's a super small bathroom! :)

Well I am knackered, been busy today, sealing all the terrocotta tiles for the floor in the kitchen, everything takes so long doesnt it? Got the back door for the kitchen today from Howdens, a Bargain at £50. Painted the bottom half in Farrow and Ball Chappell green, which I am pleased with, and its the colour for the cupboards as well. The top half is stilll at the glaziers, not looking forward to trying to fit the damm thing, The kitchen man is coming tomorrow to have a final measure, it looks like a bomb has hit it in there!
    Pawpurrs x ;)

Towel rail..highly recommend Abacus one that we've got (supplier homesupply.co.uk) ..if you can afford it stainless steel...else white/chrome which all have decent guarantees (19 year) and decent heat outputs. Didn't bother with a TRV ..just two quattro head valves (from screwfix i think). Originally bought a towel rail from screwfix..sent it back as it was full of rust on arrival and the brackets were unsuited to a curved towel rail (they don't appear to supply the same towel rails from the same manufacturer anymore though)

Would recommend a curved towel rail as it gives you a bit more space to drop the towel down behind. Go for the biggest size you can fit ...height and width but allowing about 6 inches between floor and bottom of rail.

Also consider fitting an electric heating element...didn't fit one with ours but i've thought about the option and even buried a conduit behind a skirting in order to run a cable to it if we upgrade it.
  • Hi all,
Are we all snowed in? About 5 inches here down in Herts and still snowing. Think it is worse in some places though.

I measured my towel rail - it's 500mm x 1000mm. I would say the height is ok (it has 3 sections) but it's just not wide enough. If you can fit a wider one in, go for it.

Got some piccies of the finished bathroom too and updated blog:

  • P.S. does anyone have the 10% Screwfix code for online? I deleted the email grrrrr. Thanks!

Will check out the Abacus Andrew, the Mr Central Heating one is 10yr guarantee I think and will be curved chrome with some snazzy looking TRV's I think! The bathroom is small, maybe 2mx2m or so, do you know what sort of BTU it should be pumping out, it will be used as main source of heating with underfloor heating timed.

What's an electric heating element for? Sorry, not that great with electrics!

Lots of snow in Cardiff, had a great walk with the dog this morning in the virgin snow and late last night but still got into work. half the people aren't here however!

Looks brilliant, top work! Thanks for the info on the towel rail. Our radiator at present is 620mm and installer asked if we could get 650mm and 600 if not :) Do you ahve a pic of your rail anywhere on the blog, had a look but couldn't spot?! :)
